A man from the Army came and told me cousin all of this stuff about driving a truck for the army. And I don't really want him to go. He said they told him that you didn't have to go to war you could choose what you want wanted to do, you got nice beds, go to ride a huge ship that was like a cruise ship, had ball courts on it, the food was the best in the world, you got off on weekends, only worked till 5 pm, you get a huge bonus, and i don't know what all. I was just wondering if it was true...and I want you to be completley honest and go into details if you can.

Tell him that they lied. All MOS's are deployable. he will go to Iraq! maybe more than once... he might not be on the frontlines but he will go... The Army can work him as long as the need him. Sometimes they might have a recall and call people back to work for an additional 8 hours! They have bonuses but all that money is hard to spend in the middle east because the biggest bonuses are on hard to fill jobs! I doubt its the best food in the world... really that was such an over exaggeration. I here from ex army people that the air force has the best living accomadations... I have not been in the Army but have been to the recruiting office tell him to do his own research talk to people who were in the army!!!

It's all a Lie. Like any good liar, there is a element of truth to everything the recruiter said. I'll break it down for you..Driving the big Truck: true, Choose where you want to go, a out right lie,, the element of truth to it is that you fill out what they call a "dream sheet" which they use to send you to the opposite of what you request, or where ever they feel like,, like Iraq.. YOU do have to go to War, at their discretion. the beds are small and hard,, not nice at all. That huge ship is a medical ship,, for when you get your arm blown off. it does have ball courts and good food, but like ai said,, it's a medical ship,, for when you get your arm blown off., off on the weekends- true, unless your in the field, which you are 1/2 the time, only work to 5 pm- true, unless your in Iraq, where people are trying to blow you up 24 hours a day.

The Army isn't scary.

Depending upon your job (aka MOS) its just like any other job you've had.

Basic and AIT isn't forever and they don't treat you like children once you complete training and join your unit. It will be just like it is now...with a few exceptions - which really aren't a big deal.

For instance, I was a Finance Officer over payroll. Know what we did? We got up, put on our BDUs and went to the office. I got saluted in the morning upon entry (only once). Then I'm pretty much a normal guy and boss. You do your job. I do mine. I personally made an effort to be nice to my soldiers...especially the new ones. As an enlisted soldier you would report to your section NCOIC (aka supervisor). That's it. No yelling...well, normally no yelling...you screw up good and you get yelled at. No, I dont automatically hand out crappy duties or write you up or send for the MPs. Just a chat in my office and nothing more (never had to go any further than that).

You go to lunch at lunchtime. Duh. I didn't care where you went to eat...as long as your rear was back on time. Then go home...normally 5pm.

The exceptions. I made my company do early PT three times a week for an hour. We are in the army after all so PT is good for you (besides...you still have PT tests). I often volunterred my troops my Guard Duty, Fire Watch and other unsavory duties. Guarding the motor pool all night on a Friday blows. Hopefully you don't do whatever ticked me off again.

Not bad. Normal.

That's one of the biggest bulls**t I ever heard, Who told to that recruiter that? Your cousin may be a truck driver, like mine was and a lad mine kill him, but if you are activated to go to the field you have to be involve in the conflict too. When you sign as a soldier doesn't matter your extra duties, you are a soldier 24/7. Perhaps trucks are a sensible point, due they are attacked very frequently because the rebels want to stop supplies and armory.

No, that's not true. Everything depends on where you're stationed. The food's okay, but it depends on where you are. Basic training is tough. You have no choice about going to war. The government OWNS YOU once you join. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely not a bad thing. In fact serving in the Army is fun and it's something to be proud of. But, it isn't a cake walk. Recruiters are known for lying.

recruters lie for the most part. they will tell you what you want to hear and show you all the "cool stuff" about the army. they dont tell you how you have to go out in the feild for 3 week and cant shower. or that you get stuck over seas longer than you though. best bet for military is the Air Force..

All I will say is read the small print. Joining the army can be hugely rewarding, I found it so, however ultimately by enlisting you accept that losing your life is an occupational hazard.

first of all, if he has to swear in, go to boot camp and job training(AIT), you are in the army! you have no choice wheather or not to go to war no matter what job he takes. Now if he stays a civilian and doesnt do any of the training, then it is possible. Trust me, recruiters lie out their *** just to get you in. They are not supposed to but they do.

beware of the Greeks that bare gifts. I spent 6.5 yrs. in the Army and 13.5 in the Air Force. You need to open the windows and let the smoke out.
