I had heard that you need to create a layer first? What then? I know very little about PS. Please provide me with the necessary steps and information to frame my photos. I'm sure it's a rather simple procedure.
Thanks...

Thanks for the Picasa suggestion, it is a great site but I have PS 7 and want to learn it.
Jesse & Dr. Sam - For the first time I was able to frame a photo using both your suggestions...............thanks guys!
It's tough, but Dr. Sam has the edge because instructions allowed me somewhat more versatility.

Open the image you want to process.
Check to see what the dimensions and resolution are.
Before you do anything to the image, open a new blank file.
Check the dimension and resolution of the new file.
- If they don't match your original, change them.
Fill the new file with any color you want for your background color.
Go back to your original file.
Choose the rectangular marquee tool.
Set the feather to 10-20 pixels if you want the frame to fade in.
Select a rectangle around your main subject.
Copy it with [CTRL]+[C].
Go back to the file with your backgrouns color.
Display the copied selection with [CTRL]+[V].
Merge the visible layers with [CTRL]+[SHIFT]+[E].
Voila!

It's really easy:
Set your background color to black (it will be white by default), then change your canvas size (under "re size") to a size larger than your photo (the size of the photo plus the boarder). These are all very basic procedures that you may already know how to use.

Basically you are making the photo area larger than your image, and the remaining space is being filled in with black for a frame effect.

I could answer this but it is better you learn it on your own, sorry, Spend some money on a couple of books from like amazon and they come with tutor disks. PS has a High learning curve and it is not easy to learn but it is quite a cool program and you can do so many things. I learned it buy getting books and a lot of practice. Good luck and have fun...also use the help feature, you can learn a lot there too.

You can make any kind of picture frame in the Actions menu. It's not easy to explain this. I would recomment you get the book, "Photoshop 7.0 For Dummies ", by Deke McClelland. He explains it all in easy to understand language. If you want toi learn the PS basics this is the book that will do it for you. Check out Amazon they carry it..maybe even in used dopies by now..............
