My miniature aussie was brought home 5 days ago and we have been at the vet every day since. He tested for an over abundance of spirochetes, was put on i v fluids and antibiotics but after 4 days of treatment seems to be worse. At first he waas at least able to hold down small amounts of Rebound nutrition, but now tha t doesen't even work. Any ideas?

I am doubting my vet at this point, we have been doing antibiotic, fluid under the skin, i v and attempts at the science diet intestinal nutrition may have been too much too soon.

This puppy came from a VERY reputable breeder who has been very helpful and is just as perplexed as we are. This is not a puppy mill she only has 1 to 2 litters a year total. She has taken the littermates to the vet and they have all cleared. Whatever it is, is only in my little guy.

Is there diarrhea as well? It's probably parpo, did they do a parvo test? If it is, good luck the pup needs constant iv fluid support for 4-6 days straight and nothing by mouth at all until there has been at least a few hours without the vomiting and or diarrhea, and then only very small amounts every 20 minutes or so if held down. If it isn't parvo and it's just vomiting, hold the pup off all foods and water and give sub Q or under the skin fluids or iv fluids only. Wait for two hours after the last vomit and try to offer a very small bit of water, if held down, wait 15-20 mins. and give the same amount and repeat this for a few hours gradually giving more each time until all is well. Remember that water is really abrasive to an already upset stomach and it is the last thing you want to give while they are still nauseated, you have to wait until the stomach settles before offering it. Once they are holding down water, slowly start offering a very bland diet of cooked rice and chicken or Science Diet I/D (Intestinal diet) only available at vets. If they start vomiting again during these times, stop everything and wait 2 more hours till the stomach spasms are gone and start the process over again. Good luck, I hope it's not parvo!

Did you buy this dog? I would raise some cain and not let them off the hook. They may have a puppy mill and these doga are prone to sickness. Other that this, maybe try some pepto and then take some plain white rice and cook it with some hamburger. This when done and the rice is soft can be squeezed or blended to be really smoothe. Take a small amount and feed it onlu=y a teaspoon at first and if it stays down for an hour or two try another. this is starchy and nourishing. I know someone who raises diga and she does this al the time with sick dogs. It is worth a try. You can thin it with a little water. Make it just barley warm and small amounts. refrigerate and heat in microwave or just add hot water if it is thick. Good luck. Pepto may help too. Just a little maybe a quarter tsp. and maybe three times a day. if the food stays down stop the pepto.

I would get a second vet opinion also. Maybe there is something your vet is missing and maybe another vet would notice. You could try to feed him very small amounts of rice and plain chicken, it is supposed to be much easier on their stomachs. Definitely keep back with the vet, vomiting for that many days in a row definitely means something isn't right.

Good luck and hopefully your puppy starts feeling better.

Have they tested for parvo, distemper etc.? Spirochetes generally cause diarrhea, not vomiting.

Basically a high spirochete count means he likely at something that didn't agree with him. Its comparable to a mild case of food posioning. In fact people get the same thing all the time and never even notice, they get a bit of diarrhea, it goes away no big deal.

My bel mal had a high load of spirochetes a couple months back, as well.

I'd definately be looking at other things such as the diseases I mentioned above, and the possibility of a missed food recall as well.

Call the vet NOW. No pet should be vomiting that long. Ask the vet about dehydration and treatment now for the vomiting. You need to call an emergency vet clinic if you can't get the vet to respond to you now.
You puppy is in trouble, serious trouble.

Lots of questions....

Has your vet done blood work to test for parvo???? If there is no white blood cells, that is a sign of parvo.
Have you talked to where he came from to see if anyone else is showing the same symptoms...

Had he been vaccinated?

I work at a shelter and see a lot of stuff come through. Make sure he stays on IV fluids and a load of antibiotics. Our vet has over an 80% success rate at treating parvo. Good luck I hope your pup pulls through...

aww...Well my advice is to take him to another vet to get a second opinion. and make sure you are giving him puppy food, not store bought food, since a lot of store bought food are not be suitable for puppies. Try the puppy canin brand. It should be at a local pet store. That is what I feed my puppy. Also he might be really stressed because of his health, talk to him often and spend a lot of time holding him to make him feel better psychologically. All the best for you and the little sweetheart.

Sounds like parvo to me. I had two puppies with parvo and one didn't make it. They need a lot more TLC when they are sick or they feel neglected and are more like to give up. I would try a different vet. Also the vet told me to give the puppy pedialite the clear kind with no flavor or anything.

Take him back to his breeder. And if you got him at pet land then *good luck*.. they buy from a large puppy mill that runs through 20,000 puppies per year and most are not healthy. Their guarentee is only good for a very *limited amount of diseases*.

My very best to you and i would be warming up some egg mixed with fat free plain yogurt.

GOOD LUCK HON

This remedy is developed specifically for Parvo, but is a tremendous immune system booster, to help your dog fight the lepto, or whichever of the Spirochaete he has..> http://www.parvoguard.com/

I would contact Marina Zacharias. If there is anything that can be done, she would be the one to know. I have asked her permission to post contact info on this forum..She replies quickly to emails, and if you phone, she is in PST zone. Her consults are free> http://www.naturalrearing.com/how_to_contact_us.htm
She has helped me many times over the past 20 years..she would be able to tell you what you can use locally to ward off this disease..
