You're actually correct; before that it was almost universally accepted that it was based on the teachings of the bishops, as successors of the apostles.
The bible itself was compiled by catholic bishops, so raising its authority above theirs is illogical.

Would you mind stating your source? The Roman Catholic Church has records going back much farther than 1517AD. For that matter, so does the Lutheran Church!

The faith is not based on something made up just 500 years ago. All of the major characters in the New Testament can be documented as existing in their Biblical time and place by non-faith-based archeology and historiography.

If you are going to make such a wild claim, please begin by supporting it!

If you did some ACTUAL research, you would learn that you have been exposed to some very late heretical thinking. The Gospel documents are available in various locations. The most recent find came from around 63 AD. Try actually looking at the evidence.

Many "historic studies" are just baseless ramblings.

The word "Christian" was first used in Antioch in the book of Acts.

Guess anyone with a "PHD" can call themself a historian. Doesn't mean they read.
