Nina Berman's photo of Iraq veteran Ty Ziegel and his wife, Renee Kline, won a first prize in the portraits category in the 2007 World Press photo awards announced Friday.

It tells an interesting story. After all, this man has been disfigured, but he is willing to keep on living, and his wife is willing to stick with him despite his disfigurement. It has a good angle on the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. It also is flexible enough that it could be used to oppose the inhumanity of war or to epitomize the heroism of the American soldier.

She doesn't look like she wants to be there... very sad collection of images and situation. He was such a handsome man before.

the photo on the first link made me very sad...

looking at the other one less sad- more disturbed.
