Life Without Religion Is Perfectly Fine, In My Opinion. Live By Good Morals (We Are Born Naturally Knowing What Is Right & Wrong). Honestly, I Think Religion Is Great If It Helps People Stablize Their Good Morals. But Lets Be Honest, Religion Is Not Neccessary. Any Thoughts or Insights to the Viewpoint?

Of course you can be a good person without religion. Like you said. As long as a person has morals and values they can live a good and meaningful life.

=)

Right. Religion, the Christian, religion isn't necessary UNLESS you want eternal, complete, perfect life. If you don't care about such a thing as Heaven, God, forgiveness, then I guess you don't need religion. We know right from wrong? Hitler thought it was right to put thousands and thousands into ovens! Some deranged people may have been born deranged. Their morals may tell them that having sex with little kids is a good thing to do. Some people do that very thing anyway. Is that a good thing? Yeah, If you're 100% just as sure as you can be that God didn't make the world, the 10 commandments are just 10 suggestions, Jesus did NOT die to forgive your sins and offer you eternal life, then I guess you don't need religion. I, for one, need it.

Good morals are absolutely critical, central and key. The problem is that there are real decisions to be made. Morals point a direction but do not provide the details. When you face a real decision it is religious teaching which can give the answer.

Our religions give us three things (1) reminders of our morals (through various ceremony's and traditions); (2) Support from our fellows; (3) teaching to build our understanding.

Religion is a help but not a replacement for morals.

I am an atheist of some 53 years standing.
I am a very good person and not because I am afraid of being judged when I die - that isn't going to happen anyway.
Religion is very necessary for some; the weaker element of our society who need the comfort of a whole bunch of lies to enable them to cope with life.
I don't need all that. I just need to live among my fellow men and women and to make the best of my life (the only one that I will get) and to benefit the lives of those I come into contact with.
It's really not difficult.
I will take issue with the natural instinct of knowing right from wrong ... this DOES have to be taught.

Religion helps stabilze morals and solidify what we are taught but it is so often warped into a brainwashing of sorts. It is diffinitely possible to a good person without it. You can be spiritual and not religious. I think that these things help not only guide people but give them hope. It helps to bring a person back to their center and inner being, as well. In some capacity, we all need something in which to believe. But that could range from religion to spirituality, morals, rituals, personal beliefs, humanity, science, whatever. Something beyond ourselves that helps restore balance.

I agree with the statement "Life without RELIGION is perfectly fine", but I will expound on that, because I don't mean it like you do:
I am a strong believer in Jesus and ALL of HIs teachings. I have a personal relationship with him, and I love him with all of my heart. I know that He has a purpose for my life, and that when my time here on earth is up, I will be going to spend eternity with Him. I know all of this because He's proven Himself to me over and over again. He is real, and He is alive in the form of the "Holy Spirit" even today!
On a different note, though, I want everyone to understand the difference between a relationship and a religion. I claim the term "Christianity" to be my religion--however, because I have seen too often what religion (AKA legalism) has done to people and their belief in Jesus, I choose not to be "religious" in the way I deal with people/situations.
So in short...I agree that religion can be detrimental. But a relationship with Jesus Himself is one of the best things a person can have in their life. I hope you're able to find the same thing in God's timing for you. :D

As a non US citizen living in the USA I am amazed at all these answers. No one has the courage to speak like this in public. Everyone seems to be in agreement. Of course you can be a good person without religion!

Hurrah...for once religion is not dividing us.

You don't need religion telling you anything. You are a good person if you are a good person. Not everything leads to a quick answer of what is right or wrong. Sometimes its the right thing to commit a horrible act.

Yes I am a good person. We are not born knowing right from wrong. We must be taught and as we grow we begin to grasp what is right and wrong. Because some of us are poorly taught that is where the meanness comes from. It has nothing to do with God.

I certainly think it's possible to be a good person without religion. I know quite a few. But I agree with Lewis, too, that you can be a better person with it than without it.

Note: When I've said that in the past, people have decided that I was saying that everyone without religion is bad. I don't understand that interpretation, but it is NOT what I'm saying.
