Here are a few stats. Read and tell me your opinion on so called safe sex.

"In the United States, more than 65 million people are currently living with an incurable STD. An additional 15 million people become infected each year." -Center for Disease Control

Condoms are used correctly less than 50% of the time. A condom can break, leak or slip off during intercourse. In one test, 33% (1/3) of the latex condoms leaked HIV(the virus that causes AIDS).

More than half of all people will have an STD at some point in their lifetime.

Each year, one in four teens contracts an STD

One in two sexually active persons will contact an STD/STI by age 25.

It is estimated that as many as one in four Americans have genital herpes, a lifelong infection, yet up to 90 percent of those with herpes are unaware they have it. Imagine cold sores on your genitals!

So what advice should we give our kids? Is it safe? Is "light" cigarettes safer? Would you let your kids smoke also?

Curt, how can you say I have blood on my hands. We didn't have these problems until science tried to take sin and make it safe! We use to have a society where people waited until marriage. Remember that? When we had a 5% divorce rate instead of 50+% divorce rate? Remember when the worse things young adults did was get caught chewing gum in High SchooL?

Nat,

The human species have been around a while, partly due to the way we propagate. Horny is as horny does, and I don't think the threat of disease or pregnancy is going to stop kids from experimenting.

So...you figure if 50% of folks actually using condoms out there do not know how to deploy one properly, does it make sense to think "I have a 50% chance of it not working anyways, so why use it at all." I would think that 50% is a better bet than a 100% chance of catching whatever from doing the deed bareback.

I think the 33% "leakage" statistic is tied into folks not knowing how to use condoms. That "leakage" can be a death sentence by containing HIV, or a host of other STDs...at the very least, it's releasing swimmers into what may be a very fertile female...another set of problems.

So, you're looking at a 50/50 chance to begin with, and the worst case scenario of 33% leakage of those who do not know how to properly use them...

Kids will do what they set their minds to do...I would want mine to at least use them. NOT knowing about condoms or how to use them is not going to make them stop wanting to have sex.

Very scary statistics. I don't think condoms prevent everything. I think the only "safe" sex, is no sex. I think condoms were created to help stop un-wanted pregnancy's however it still happens. I think the main reason people are still getting STD's is because they don't use condoms at all, and think that it wont happen to them, type of thing. Did you know that 1 in 4 people from Africa have AID's!? Makes me not want to have sex with anyone but myself.

these are very interesting questions. as far as condom use i believe your research due to my own experience with them. every time my partner and i used condoms something was wrong where it slipped off and all too often they break, but i had no idea they leaked. thats some scarry sh*t! when it comes to smoking..... im against it. i dont do it and i hope my children dont get sucked into thinking its okay cause i preach to them everytime i see some one coughing like they are dying or have difficulty breathing over something simple that they have done. they have seen their own father suffering the effects of cigarette smoking so i hope it frightens them. he tells them to never smoke yet he still does it! now wouldnt that confuse a child?

we can teach our kids to try to be clean as much as they can. and do every thing that is necessary for their health , to dont get any disease, now with condom or without it.

many people who were live befor us, they didnt use condom durig their life, and they never get STD.

Many more kids and adults are killed from believing this counsel of despair -- because they don't bother with condoms at all -- lthan could ever be saved by it. Millions of deaths in Africa can be blamed in part on people like you.

I know it's not intentional. But you and people like you have tremendous amounts of blood on your hands even so.

it's simple... just have sex when you are sure that it's the right person to have it with. that's how I have always handled it and I'm STD free... :)
