A genotype is the genes. The stuff you can't see.

The phenotype is the physical characteristics. The stuff you can see.

For example, if a "pure" white mouse (bb) mated with a "pure" black mouse (BB), they offspring would be a "hybrid" black mouse (Bb).

The mouse's phenotype is black.
The mouse's genotype is Bb.

The way to remember it is that the GENOtype describes your GENES, and the PHenotype describes your PHysical characteristics.

Your genotype is the combination of recessive and dominant alleles-like when one does a punnet square. In simple mendelian genetics XY x XX= XX, XY, XX, XY. Those are the genotypes of male vs female. The phenotype would be what is actually observed. In this case it would be two males and two females.
