My hair is naturally brown (I think lol) but is now colored brown with red undertones and some subtle black lowlights. I am going to dye my hair blonde (think Gwen Stefani but not white haired Gwen Stefani) at home by myself. How do I know how much to bleach it and when its ok to go ahead and do the color?
And i know everyone will tell me that for this big change i should go to a salon, but that isn't really an option....
Help me!

Please, please rethink doing it yourself at home. You could potentially damage your hair so much that it will break off or be impossible for a professional to fix. If $$ is the reason that you can't go to a salon, there are other options. There are hairdressing schools all over the country. They are always looking for people to practice on for free or at a greatly reduced price. Even a newly trained hairstylist is better than handling this yourself.

you are a mess, first of all were the black lowlites permanent? if so they might not even lift up any lighter, also if the brown has red undertones when you bleach your hair it will be orange it probably would anyway because bleach you buy at store is not as strong as a salon formula, your hair might break off and fall out after all this color, it depends on what shape your hair is in, is it healthy and strong? is there still some elasticity in it? when was your last color? i would recommend waiting at least 3-4 weeks in between colors, and i would suggest using some kind of protein treatment like REDKEN CAT on it for at least a week prior to coloring just to make it strong again

First of all, your crazy...There is no possible way your going to do it yourself..It takes another hand, and an experienced colorist to get the job done......Your cant just slap on the bleach and think your going to have this perfect blonde hair..Forget it...Unless you want orange, and every other awful color along with it...Take the advice from your first comment..your going to end up spending alot of money and time to get it fixed, after youve cried a million tears...Even walking into a salon, there is a big risk...Ask around and get someone who knows their business in this area of color.. You will be definitely sorry, if you dont heed to some serious advice....

first dye your hair a solid color dark enough to cover the red tones wait a few weeks before going lighter if you just start bleaching the chemicals will not turn your hair blonde but more of a orange color so take it slow and remember no lighter than 3 shades at a time

You are dying your hair if you are going blond, you are stripping it of color (to get out the brown) and then putting back color. It is a multi step process and if it is NOT done right you will hurt your hair and a lot of it could break and/or fall out.

Instead of going blond now, slowly color it down to a very light brown. Then consider blond slowly or you will end up buying a blond wig to cover a bald head.

which you will are trying using shade oops to do away with the colour. i'm no longer specific if it works or no longer, despite the fact that it fairly is worth a are trying. And if that doesn't artwork , then what you're able to do is flow to a salon as quickly as extra and have them do a corrective bleach and then do a glaze over it to help blend the completed concern lower back on your elementary shade. wish this helps
