Will my cat and new puppy get along...ever?

Question

My cat is 5 years old, and we just got a puppy 5 days ago. They met once, while the puppy was sleeping, and as soon as she moved, the cat hissed (which she's never done before), and ran back to our bedroom, where she's been pretty much ever since. I want them to co-exist...will it happen? Am I expecting too much too soon, or will the cat 'come around'?

They will, but remember your cat is middle-aged and probably doesn't have a lot of patience with a "baby" like a puppy, not to mention that a new animal is taking up her domain and your time. Lavish her with attention and don't try and force any interaction between the two of them. Let your cat get used to the new animal on her own terms.

The cat will observe the puppy and realize 1. that it is a baby and 2. that it's not dangerous. She will get over being scared of the puppy. The puppy, of course, will want to play with the cat, and the cat probably won't like the pup's style. She will hiss, if only to demonstrate that she is the adult and the boss. She may even scratch if the puppy annoys her too much.
In time they will coexist peacefully. Whether they will actually become friends depends on their individual temperaments.
Give the cat extra attention, especially when the puppy is around.

I had a 2 year old cat and then I got an 6 year old puppy about a year ago, my cat hissed and he has never done it before until then but after a week or a week and a half, he got used to the dog and ever since that they're like pals!! Good Luck!! ;)

The cat may come around, especially if she puts the dog in his place.

Two years after we adopted the cat, we adopted the dog. The dog weighed 65 lbs, the cat at the time, weighed 5. It took her about a week to discover that, hey, this dog is dumb, and a lot of fun to mess with. The cat learned the "play-bow" that dogs use to signal they are ready to play. Now she signals him and the chase is on! The dog doesn't have a chance.

When the dog comes in from a walk, the cat walks up and marks him with her face. It's her dog.

They'll sort things out, and maybe become friends. Key is to show them both lots of attention so nobody gets jealous.

You have just introduced a new competitor to your house and your cat's wants all your affections. Seeing the puppy is threatening to your cat's perfect world.

Give it time and don't over look the fact the cat will vie for attention even more when you give it to the puppy. Even it out so both are in light of favor when you can.

No it is not good for him cats/kittens need a lot more protein and other minerals and vitamins than dogs do. Try mixing the kitten food and the puppy food, it could be he just likes the dish the dog is using, cats are fussy critters, it is part of what makes them so irresistible! Or you could try putting the puppy food in the kitty bowl and visa versa so you can se if it's the dish or the food.

I got a puppy for xmas and oliver our four year old cat is finally starting to come down the front of the house and be in the same room with her, and they'll just watch each other intently.

Your puppy will adjust quickly as he isn't probably too set in his ways yet. The cat might take a while. It could even take months, making slow progress. Or, it could take a week. It really depends on your cat. But, a day... yes, you are expecting way too much. Shoot for the stars, expect the moon.

yes they will you just have to keep them together and if the dog starts stuff you tell the dog no and the same with the cat it will work out i had them sleeping together to keep warm.
