I have a 2002 Nissan Altima and now the steering controls on the steering wheel stopped working. the check engine light came on at that time. What would be the problem? Is it an easy fix? How much would it cost?

Thanks,
Gary

Hi Gary!

You can download the Factory Service Manual for your Altima here:

That'd be my first effort.

Second, and I'm assuming you mean all the radio and cruise control buttons on the wheel quit? If so, you'll most likely throw a code. Review all Nissan ECU codes, and how to pull them, here:

A friend of mine was having the same problem with their 02 Altima. They went to the dealer for a diagnosis and the mechanic hooked up the odb computer. The code that was generated related to several different areas of the vehicle. The dealer being familiar with Alitmas simply reprogrammed the transmission computer. Problem solved. It turned out to be a very common issue with all 6cyl mid 2000 Nissan's, the transmission fault caused a shimmy, which tore a motor mount making the car shake significantly. There was also a noise the car was producing that was determined to be the upper timing chain guides. Nissan recommends the timing chains be replaced in your car at 60k miles. Best of luck!
