In the mean time, a friend has foun my passport and sent it to me. My question is what happens if I attempt to go to Thailand with the same passport??? And what should I do to avoid trouble. I'd make sure I had some other official documents. I'd also contact a Thai embassy and ask whether I should expect a problem upon entry to Thailand.

You don't mention which country you're in. Here's a link to the Thai embassy in the US:

Eeither:
1. Contact your embassy asap and tell them you found out. You may have to deal with the police again, though.

2. Shred it

But DO NOT try to travel on it. It will be flagged already and you could get in huge trouble for having a "stolen" passport.

Thailand is quite particular and strict with their laws on this. But since you found your passport , have it with you when you make a return visit you should feel comfortable that you will not have any problems.

They say it is always good to photocopy your passport and have a copy of it with you in a different place. Such as in your luggage etc. I suppose it would not hurt to have two copies. I am going to China and TIbet this spring so it is making me think.
