You should have it after. 1) You don't want to have cramps. 2) You need to replenish the muscles you just worked out.

AFTER. Studies have indicated that it is ideal to consume food that is high in protein between 40-60 min. after a workout. Your body needs nutrients to help repair its self. This 40-60 minute period is crucial -- the body will absorb nutrients very well within this time frame, which will help speed up the recovery process. This will help your muscles grow.

As far as consuming food before you train, you certainly should eat something about an hour to and hour and a half before. However, a protein shake would not be ideal. Something that is high in complex carbohydrates is what you would want. You need the carbohydrates to help fuel your workout. Consuming a protein shake may even bog you down for your workout as it is more difficult to digest than carbohydrates.

To summarize, Protein shake after your workout, complex carbohydrates before (a yam for example).

Good luck!

One hour before. Enough time to digest (mainly so you don't vomit) but also your body will need the energy. You'll still be digesting it until around dinner time so don't worry about wasting it.
