I mean come on ....no bread or butter in the ingrediants.

I'm not sure - the only thing I can think of is that people used to refer the real important things as "the bread & butter" of whatever it was they were referring to, i.e. "love is the bread and butter of a relationship."

there is something about poor families back in olden times, and in winter months they would only have the pickles to eat so the pickles became the "bread and butter" of the meals.
