They were not close at all because man can't get to heaven of his own doing but only through a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

The Babel story illustrates that salvation comes by faith and relationship with God not of human works.

not even close

they basically were disbelieving God

God promised He would NEVER AGAIN destroy the earth with a flood... and just as people didnt believe he would send the flood... they didnt believe he would NOT send another flood...

bottom line disbelief... they were not even close to heaven.. God split them up not because they were close but as a mercy to end the futile thing... at most they would THINK they accomplished something of no positive significance

Well, not very close because the Bible says "But The Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built." ( Gen. 11:5) so I'm assuming it wasn't very big at al.
One of the funnier things in the Bible, if you look at it!
But, God did not destroy the tower. It says He confused their language and scattered them abroad and they ceased to build the city.

I doubt very far considering the building materials of the day. Most likely the punishment was due to their arrogance of God, and want to raise themselves on equal ground (so to speak) with God.

Since heaven exists outside of time and space, they were no closer than they were the day they started.

They would have never reached heaven and if they had they only would have been judged and cast down to the pits of hell because of their sin.

God did not destroy the tower. After he confused the language of the builders, they gradually stopped working on it.

the whole point of the story is to show that man cannot get to heaven on their own- only through God's son Jesus-

Assuming you are not kidding, you need to go and look up terms like allegory, metaphor and symbolism in a dictionary.
