I have 3 tattoos (including one on the inside of my wrist) and when I got my first one, the tattoo artist told me that the least painful place to get a tat done is one your shoulder blade.
However, a tattoo is not painless and there's no point in pretending it is, but it depends on the individual as to how much it hurts. For me it's not so bad, it stings really badly but it's not unbearable pain and to be honest, after a while the pain sort of numbs the area anyway so you basically get used to it. I know there are other people who would disagree and say it's really sore, so it does depend on your own pain threshold. But, on the whole it's fair to say it's painful but not agonising like they're cutting your leg off!
As far as your being scared of needles...if you get it done on your back you won't 'see' the needle, you'll just hear the buzzing noise and you get used to that.

I am halfway through having a backpiece done and it does hurt. I've had some 20 hours done so far and it stings rather than burns. It is not as bad as the wrist, the elbow, or the inner bicep. It depends on how comfortable you are when being attacked by the tattooist. If your neck is twisted when being tottooed on the upper part of your back you will feel ''uncomfortable''. It will hurt anywhere near the spine but it is bearable. My advice is to concentrate on your breathing and to tell yourself that that the pain will soon be over. And it will be! There is no way to avoid the pain, alas.
It is not trashy. However, stop being a sissy and get it over with. Growl!!!

Tattooing is always going to cause some discomfort but how much it hurts depends on each persons pain threshold. You will feel a mild burning sensation (not a stabbing pain) while the artist works but this sensation will subside quickly while he/she stops to wipe away the blood an excess ink. After the tattoo is completed it will feel a bit like a patch of sunburn for a couple of hours but you'll be so proud of yourself you won't care :)
Best advice is to find a reputable artist and check out thier studio beforehand. They should be certified/licensed by your local council and always have a look for any design awards from tattoo exhibitions! Experienced artists work faster as well so there's less pain.
Hope this helps and good luck with your tattoo

I have tattoos in the area you are talking about..., about that size, and also a tattoo taking up the space between them...and let me tell you, girl....that sh*t hurt!!!!
Like you, I am the biggest wimp ever....I hate needles....I even freaked when I got my ears pierced. So if I can do it; you can do it.
I found that if I take deep breathes and focus on something else (anything but that heinous noise of the gun on my back), the pain is somewhat controlled. I also just had the outline of the tattoos done first....then I went back each time, after the outline healed to get it filled in....but from the sounds of what you are getting....maybe you should get one complete angel wing on one side...then come back a couple of weeks later to get the other. Other people may disagree, but they probably aren't fellow wimps like us, either.

Of course it's going to hurt - all tattoos hurt no matter where you get them. The best thing to do is to relax. Try not to tense up - that will only make it worse. Deep, slow breaths and it will be over in no time. Especially since you are just having black outline done it should go be fairly quickly.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I don't have my tattoo on my shoulder blade though...each person is different in terms of their pain tolerance...and what parts of their bodies hurt more. What may be agonizing pain to me might be nothing to you...It is going to hurt though. It's a range of 4-14 needles poking you at a speed of almost 250 pulses/second, going in at 1/16th of an inch. Realistically though, because the needles are penetrating your skin that quickly and in that number, it doesn't actually feel like a needle. It's not the most pleasant feeling admitedly...but it's bearable.

centered? i am working on a tattoo that will eventually cover my whole back. so far the only part that is almost unbearable for long periods of time is the spine. shoulderblades are not really painful. the most important thing you can do is to research a good artist and find someone who will do your skin justice. i love angel wing tattoos but not every tattooer can do them well. if you need help finding someone to do them i'd be glad to help.
