My 3 month old girl, Annika, screams hysterically throughout all of her diaper changes. This has only just occured in the last week. I've tried putting her play gym of toys on the change table to keep her occupied, but that doesn't take her mind of it. I've tried talking to her and smiling with her, but she's just not interested. The minute I pick her up again, she's fine, and couldn't be happier. What's going on, and is there something I can do to fix it, or is it a grin and put up with it situation?

Your baby is still an infant and I've never had to change an infant that get agitated. But I have babysat and changed the diapers of toddlers and young children and when they get antsy, I've found that giving them a toy to hold helps hold their attention. Maybe if you put a soft stuffed toy on your baby;s tummy it will calm things a little.

Honestly this is perfectly normal - most likely. Worst case scenario is that she may have sensory issues and even those just need to be worked with to overcome. First of all you are right by talking to her. Remember to always talk to your baby - anytime. This is comforting and how she will learn and bond with you. Now that being said..She may be cold - You can try covering her belly with a soft blanket and be sure she is not laid on a cold surface. Also don't be afraid to give her a pacifier as a baby. I know bad habits, blah, blah,blah...but there is time for weaning from the paci later. Pacifiers are soothing - hence the name pacifiers. It may comfort her - especially if she is breast fed. Also, do you use a wipe warmer? Those are great. Tip: If you have/get one try flipping the whole stack of wipes before you use one. This will give you the warmest one from the bottom and rotation will keep the wipes from drying out. Those things are only about $20 and are great.
Good luck and best wishes for U & Annika! :)

Most of them do it because they would rather be moving around but just keep an eye on her sometimes the smallest things can happen that may have scared her to make her that way something as simple as a diaper wipe or so on.Hope it gets better.Go to club mom and see if any other mom has had this problem.;c)

Another thought would be singing to her or giving her something to hold while you are changing her. If that doesn't work, my guess is she probably just doesn't like being changed.

If she is a deep sleeper, you may want to try while she is asleep, my older daughter used to sleep so deeply, that she would sleep through anything...it's worth a shot for some silent diaper changing :)

Good luck with this...but from what you explained you may need to grin and bear it.

My cousin was like this. I dont think there is anything you can really do. Some babies just dont like getting their nappy changed.
I'm sure she'll outgrow it, but until then there isnt much you can do. The gym was a good idea. Just get it over and done with as quick as you can. Reassuring her and soothin sounds is about the best you can do.
Good Luck, I hope she grows out of this soon.

Do you use a wipe warmer? Perhaps she dislikes the feel of cool or cold wipes on her bottom! With my son, the older he got and could verbalize, i realized he was actually afraid of heights! He'll tolerate being changed on his own changer at home, but do it in restaurant bathroom, or dept. store, and he literally freaks out, clutches onto me, and cries hysterically. Maybe she's developing a fear of heights? Try changing her on the floor-secondary after using warm wipes if you don't already. Sounds like you're getting lots of advice, so good luck!

My daughter went threw the same thing and although it is frustrating you just have to wait it out- its just a phase and it will stop eventually. Until then try singing nursery rhymes and playing silly games with her. It important to make it a fun and happy experience for her. Annika is a beautiful name. Good luck.

Sometimes my twins will scream when I change their diapers. Sometimes it's because they are having a slight diaper rash, or the diaper just rubs them raw, or it is the wipes. But when it's all done then they're happy.
