i need to check the serial number to see if it is stolen.

Under the gun laws, if you purchased the gun from a licensed gun dealer or store - you had to have a background check done.
When a gun is purchased the serial number is recorded as having a new owner.
So if you legally purchased the gun.....you have a receipt so call your local law enforcement agency and ask them.
If you purchased the gun illegally then it is probably stolen so call local law enforcement and turn it in.
Don't even think of just dropping it somewhere as that is
1)stupid
2)cowardly
3) putting the life of an innocent person at risk --a child might find it or someone might be killed with it.

call you local police department with the firearms serial number they will tell you with in a few minutes

There is no such database you as a civilain can access. You will have to go through a police dept./sheriff's office to do that.

Start with your police department.
They can check

Otherwise, you get caught with it, you could be liable for any uses ofthe gun.

just have the police check it, there is no real web site for this.
