I don't want to subject my poor kitty to the vet AGAIN, but I want to collect a urine sample from him for the vet. I took out all of the litter from the box, thinking that he'd use it anyway, at the recommendation of my vet tech, but he hasn't used it! Should I try to wait it out? I figure he'll eventually use it, but the thing is I have two cats, so I have to keep an eye on who's using it...what about when I'm not here, or at night?!

Thanks in advance for answering my kitty questions.

Go to your vet and get a couple of little cups of Plastic pelets, I can't for the life of me remember the name of it, but it is hard black plastic pelets you put into a litter pan so they don't absorb or contaminate the urine and isolate your cat in a bathroom with his own box so you don't get the other kitties urine, once he has used it suck it up into a syringe you can also get from the vet. The best way is to have the vet squeeze the kitty's bladder and do a table top catch which isn't sterile either.

You can buy a product called "No-Sorb." It is essentially kitty litter that will not absorb urine, so you should be able to collect a sample. The other option is to put a small amount of newspaper shards in the box. These will absorb some of the litter, but not all of it. If you can place your cat in a seperate room from the other cat, this will help you determine if it is the correct urine.
Also, I know that this might not be convenient, but the sample should be refrigerated unless it is going to be used within 30 minutes. Otherwise, the results may be inaccurate.
Good luck.

sometimes we have to do things that make us feel bad when it come to our pets but the vet tech or vet is the most qualified to collect the specimen. I think you would feel worse and so could your kitty if there was something wrong and you waited to long to have it dealt with, you might try separating the kitty in a room, with its litter box, and line the box with a plastic bag and just enough litter to get kitty to go in the box and when you see her use the box ,quick tilt the box so a urine runs to one corner an collect it.might be worth a try.

the vet should have these little beads, look like craft beads that are black that you put in the bottom of the litter box and when the cat uses the box you can just pour everything into a sterile or clean container, if you need just one cats urine i would put that one in the bathroom with the litter box. and if not i would take him to the vet and they can do a cysto, i work at a vet and i promise it doesnt hurt them

I know my vet provided what looked like black plastic beads/pellets to put in the litter box. They were not absorbent and your cat can still dig like it is litter and then you pour out your sample! To insure that it is from the right cat, just block him in the room with the special box for a day or two (of course make sure he has food and water!).

I think reducing the amount of litter over a little time would be best, but I'll guess you do not have time?

Lock him in a room, without the other cats, until you get the sample. This way there's no worry about who's pee it really is.

I have to admit that a majority of my collegues treat animals with cruelity. We can do urine sample in less than an hour, but we pretend to be professional and take a week or 2. The way they treat cats is to put them in cage and feed them budget food.
My advice is don't take them to the vet. For urine sample you can do the human testing kind, because I studied urinalysis for years and had conducted various researches & experiments; because human and cats are not only both mamals, they have similar features as well (take anatomy classes for example when they dissect cats).

So my advice is for you to go to a regular physician for a urinalysis and bring your cat's urine sample and swap it in the bottle for an analysis, the result will be the same. It would be much more safe for your cats and more inexpensive.

unless you can follow her around and catch it in a soup ladel, your chances are slim. they may have to use a catheter. may have to just do it and take he to the vet again. uti's can kill a cat in 24 hrs. your choice. if that is the problem.
she knows you're trying to get it. she may be going somewhere in the house

Oh, oh, oh! Pick me! I know the answer! Just buy another litter box. Or once he uses it, clear it out, he has to go sometime. Hope this info was helpful.

You might have to just watch when he goes. Too bad you can't get him to pee in a sterilized urine container. That's all I can think of.
