I would think that they wouldn't be harmful...or doctors wouldn't use them. I've had lots of ultrasounds because the dr. wants to monitor my baby's growth, so I hope they don't do anything harmful.

An ultrasound machine uses pulsed wave ultrasound ...so the waves are entering the uterus is short metered bursts ...this is completely safe . Its not as if these sound waves arent around you now. They are... the transducer just creates these waves at ONLY the specific level , or MegaHertz, needed to perform the test and focuses them in a beam ,that goes from the camera inot your womb . It's a very cool piece of equiptment , and most poeple don't realize that the sound going iot your belly is created by an array of crystals atop the scanhead :-) No doccumented biological effects have ever been doccumented from the safe used of pulsed wave diagnostic ultrasound.

There are concerns about continuous wave ultrasound causing heat that could , in theory , warm the fluid around the baby ..however use of continuous wave ultrasound is very limited . The doppler your Dr check the heart rate at the office is continuous wave , but that only takes about 2 minutes ...so not enough time to generate heat. That is why most OB's will dissuade pregnant women from buying hand held dopplers for home use . Its not that it WILL cause a problem , its more " Why risk it ".

You're in great hands ...enjoy your images :-)

Ever stand too close to a speaker at a consert and feel the sound in your chest? Ultrasound is sort of the same thing (but doesn't harm, because it can't be heard). It's sound waves that bounce off the baby and the computer makes into a picture.
Completely and totally safe.
Try not to worry.
I hope everything works out for you and the baby.
Congratulations.

If an ultrasound was harmful to the fetus, I don't think that every woman that has a baby would be having them, and I certainly don't think that if it would be harmful that your OBGYN would be doing them weekly if it were. Doctors know best.

If it weren't safe, they wouldn't do it. I've had three kids and lots of complications (ultrasound or more a month) and it never killed or damaged my kids.
