Gaffer and grip are forms of electrician. Grips are responsible for lights and rigging, as well as the booms used for overhead mikes, lights, and cameras. The gaffer is the chief electrician, responsible for designing lighting plats and for running the lights during the actual shoot. Both these terms are specific to the film industry, and the grips are unique to the US and Canada; in other countries the grip is exclusively responsible for the camera mounting and support. Neither of these terms is used in live theatre.
