If I use real shrooms, I start em both together. If I used canned, I start the onions first.

I would cook them separately.

Mushrooms and onions have different textures and will cook at different rates. To get the most flavor, I would first saute the onions over medium low heat until they are well caramelized and then remove them to a bowl. Next cook the mushrooms, again over medium low heat. When you have cooked most of the water out of the mushrooms, add the onions back in and finish cooking.

Mushrooms have a high water content, that is why you don't ever want to 'wash' the mushrooms. You just gently brush them or use a slightly dampened paper towel and wipe them.
Because they are what they are, always saute the onions first. When the onions are almost to your liking, gently toss in the mushrooms..a minute or two (o.k. maybe three), viola--a perfect saute! Enjoy.

You always begin with the onions first as they take the longest to cook. Mushrooms are much more delicate & if cooked to long, will take on a rubbery texture. Cook the onions untill transparent then add the mushrooms. Don't have your heat too high or they'll burn before they're truly cooked......Good luck

I usually start the onions a little before the mushrooms. Just because my husband hates raw onions.

it depends on how cooked you want the onions, if you want a little bit of crunch but still sweet i'd add them both at the same time. If you want them a little more cooked then that, add them before, but only for 2 or 3 minutes on medium heat.
