Been part of family meals every now and then ever since i can remember. So, totally. Plenty of people eat it.

Something like that. In my family we have a "salad" with cucumbers and onions soaked in vinegar. It's really good with meats and potato sides.

I like onions, cucumbers, and tomatoes soaked in vinegar. I've never eaten onions alone that way, though!

In Mexico we use small onions and place them in jars wth vinegar, small chilies, onions and spices. You leave them for a few days and they actually taste quite good. In Yucatan and Quintana Roo, two states in Souther Mexico they use a kind of purple onion in vinegar that is quite good too.

pickled onions are perfectly normal, have you tried pickled gherkins, beetroot, eggs?
