I was wondering if there actually are blue basset hounds.
i was on this one website and they were selling a bassset puppy that was blue. Are they a fluke? Or are they real? Does any one own own? Any wesites for the blue basset?

Blue Basset Hounds ARE, in fact able to be AKC registered, but no one bothered to look up the standard before answering you. Blue basset hounds come from a recessive dilute color gene that may have health problems associated with it (telescoping intestines, skin & food allergies), but some argue this can happen with any color. It is an undesireable color, but according to the standard any recognised hound color is acceptable, and blue is a reconised color. Blue color is also not listed as as a fault or disqualifacation. If you are going to answer a question, at least know what you are talking about people!

Not necessarily but most blue versions of dogs who are not normally blue (like bassets) are much more prone to health problems. The "blue" color is actually a genetic defect and breeding to it makes it worse in succesive generations. This is often is associated with other defects, and coat problems. Typically any problems a breed are prone to to begin with are much more likely to occur in blues as well as more atypical problems. This doesn't mean that your dog will necessarily have any problems, but there is a great higher likelihood that it will if it is blue. If it typical coloration the dog is more likely to be healthy but you should not breed it because it still carried the defective gene. I also am just speaking to dogs generally. You should check and see if the AKC accepts blue as color that meats the standard. Typically AKC disallows colors that indicate a genetic problem in a dog breed. For example fawn dobermans and blue daschunds are diqualified as not conforming to breed standard due to health problems that appear in these colorations.

I found this information: Avoid buying a "rare blue basset." This dog (which is really gray) carries a recessive gene that predisposes it to intestinal problems, food allergies and severe skin problems. Don't buy from a person who sells blue bassets, since a responsible breeder wouldn't intentionally sell a defective dog.

I have seen one that was about 4 months old....but like others mentioned the gene may be linked to hamrful things and also it is not a recognized color of the breed

They wouldn't be AKC registerable & I would suspect they were part Bluetick hound

well you can dye a dog's hair actually. That's something I learned from watching "Sweet Sixteen", yes spoiled rich girls dye their poodles pink for their special day. Also you can paint dog's toenails, that's more common. Kelly Osbourne dyed her bulldog pink once. PETA hates stuff like that, but PETA also doesn't want people to use animals for anything, even as pets (if you read into what they do) But that's everything you need to know about dying dog's hair!
