We heard that next Tuesday is a day when vets will charge 25% less to have pets fixed. We thought our vet said to wait until they were 4 months old. Anyone have any knowledge on this subject?

You should actually wait until they're about 6 months old. Their little immune systems aren't strong enough to deal with it if they were to catch an infection or heaven forbid, something else like parvo. Spring for the extra 25% later on, or ask if you can get that deal later. They'll probably still give it to you because they want your business.

Another option is some shelters or humane societies might offer fixing for dirt cheap. Contact them and find out their prices, they're usually funded by charity, and will offer it year round.

I would recommend waiting till they are older. Our vet recommends 5 months. By doing it early (like now) you increase the risk of stunting the growth of many internal organs mainly dealing with the urethra. This may lead to issues later in life with bladder and urinary tract issues. On the other hand if you can only afford the spay/neutering at 25% less than do it. If you let your female go into heat, it will be much more expensive and more risk in the spay. The blood flow is increased to the uterus after the first heat cycle and is a much more delicate surgery. By fixing them/her before for the first heat cycle, you will decrease her chance of cancer by 80%!!!!

If you decide to wait, PLEASE PLEASE make sure you are able and willing to do it no later than 5 months.

I am involved with a shelter and know how many unwanted dogs are out there. Thank you for being responsible pet owners

It's best to wait until they are four months out at a minimum. I usually recommend waiting until they are 6 months of age before spay and neuter, but if for some reason you HAVE to get them fixed sooner, then do not do it any younger than four months.

8 weeks is too young, do not get them fixed yet.

Yes. Research has shown this practice to be harmful. The minimum age (and better then the old idea of six months) is now considered to be four months. It's important for the female to be done prior to her first heat for medical reasons. Health benefits for the male are minimal so castration is for owner convenience (males are a pain when a local female is in heat) and to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Tootsie (as in Tootsie Roll) We had a female Basset that lived to be 12 and this was her registered name (not call name) along with her Kennel Prefix. A few other ideas: Sophie Charmin Skye Jetta Nike Cookie

Usually you have to wait til they are between 4 and 6 months old. Double check with your vet though.

Yes, most vets will not perform a surgery this soon for several reasons. Wait the appropriate time frame - hormonally this is really not recommended.

Your dog has to be at least 6 monthes or older to get nuetured or spayed. If you do it too early, it won't be fully devoluped and the nuetering or spaying would have gone to waste.
