Does the Bible say that all who would have God’s spirit would “speak in tongues”?

1 Cor. 12:13, 30: “Truly by one spirit we were all baptized into one body . . . Not all have gifts of healings, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they?” (Also 1 Corinthians 14:26)

1 Cor. 14:5: “Now I would like for all of you to speak in tongues, but I prefer that you prophesy. Indeed, he that prophesies is greater than he that speaks in tongues, unless, in fact, he translates, that the congregation may receive upbuilding.”

Does ecstatic speech in a language that a person never learned prove that he has holy spirit?

Can the ability to “speak in tongues” come from a source other than the true God?

1 John 4:1: “Beloved ones, do not believe every inspired expression [“every spirit,” KJ, RS], but test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God.” (See also Matthew 7:21-23; 2 Corinthians 11:14, 15.)

Among those ‘speaking in tongues’ today are Pentecostals and Baptists, also Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, Methodists, Lutherans, and Presbyterians. Jesus said that the holy spirit would ‘guide his disciples into all the truth.’ (John 16:13) Do the members of each of these religions believe that the others who also “speak in tongues” have been guided into “all the truth”? How could that be, since they are not all in agreement? What spirit is making it possible for them to “speak in tongues”?

A joint statement by the Fountain Trust and the Church of England Evangelical Council admitted: “We are also aware that a similar phenomenon can occur under occult/demonic influence.” (Gospel and Spirit, April 1977, published by the Fountain Trust and the Church of England Evangelical Council, p. 12) The book Religious Movements in Contemporary America (edited by Irving I. Zaretsky and Mark P. Leone, quoting L. P. Gerlach) reports that in Haiti ‘speaking in tongues’ is characteristic of both Pentecostal and Voodoo religions.—(Princeton, N.J.; 1974), p. 693; see also 2 Thessalonians 2:9, 10.

There are three occasions in the book of Acts where speaking in tongues accompanied the receiving of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4; 10:44-46; 19:6). However, these three occasions are the only places in the Bible where speaking in tongues is an evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit. Throughout the book of Acts thousands of people believe in Jesus and nothing is said about them speaking in tongues (Acts 2:41; 8:5-25; 16:31-34; 21:20). Nowhere in the New Testament is it taught that speaking in tongues is the only evidence a person has received the Holy Spirit. In fact, the New Testament teaches the opposite. We are told that every believer in Christ has the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 1:13-14), but not every believer speaks in tongues (1 Corinthians 12:29-31).

So, why was speaking in tongues the evidence of the Holy Spirit in those three passages in Acts? Acts chapter 2 records the apostles being baptized in the Holy Spirit and empowered by Him to proclaim the Gospel. The Apostles were enabled to speak in other languages (tongues) so they could share the truth with people in their own languages. Acts chapter 10 records the Apostle Peter being sent to share the Gospel with non-Jewish people. Peter and the other early Christians, being Jews, would have a hard time accepting Gentiles (non-Jewish people) into the church. God enabled the Gentiles to speak in tongues to demonstrate that they had received the same Holy Spirit that the apostles had received (Acts 10:47; 11:17).

Acts 10:44-47 describes this, “While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, 'Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.'” Peter later points back to this occasion as proof that God was indeed saving the Gentiles (Acts 15:7-11).

Speaking in tongues in nowhere presented as something all Christians should expect when they receive Jesus Christ as their Savior and are therefore baptized in the Holy Spirit. In fact, out of all the conversion accounts in the New Testament, only two record speaking in tongues in that context. Tongues was a miraculous gift that had a specific purpose for a specific time. It was not, and never has been, the evidence of the reception of the Holy Spirit.

Well everyone has pretty much hit on all the scriptures to read. I wondered about the same thing myself and decided to just study it out myself. My conclusion is that yes tongues are real and no you do not have to speak in tongues to be saved. The Bible speaks of two types of tongues. One that is a human language that you do not know and the other a Spiritual language that you do not know. If you would like to talk about this over email please feel free to email me. I will be more than happy to share with you what I researched on it. In any case like this, the best answer is to get a good concordance, find all the scriptures you can about it, pray that God will help you understand and decide from there. No harm in asking questions but people all have their own opinions. On the Day of Judgment I figure its better to say "I did my best to understand" than "Well that's what Billy (or whoever) said".

Acts 2:4, 10:45-46, 19:6, St. Mark 16-17. Study these scriptures and you will find out that your brother in law is correct. The Holy Ghost is the dispenser of God's Love. It is the power to overcome sinful behavior. It is the earnest of our inheritance!! We have to have it. You will notice that nowhere in the New Testament does it tell us how to get into Heaven. It tells how to get into God's Kingdom. St. John 3:5, Acts 2:38. It tells us about Heaven, but we must be Born Again to enter His Kingdom. Listen to the Bible. God Bless you in Jesus name. Paul wrote to the Church at Corinth to explain that not all will speak in tongues and interpretations. This is a gift that comes from the initial infilling of the Holy Ghost, All of the Spiritual Gifts come from the Holy Ghost. This is a gift from God. It is all wrapped up and waiting to be delivered. When I got my infilling, I was flying on such a high for days. I couldn't stop! I didn't want to stop!! I was looking for this my whole life! God took away my alcoholism which had me bound for 25+ years!!! Experienceit for yourself. Don't let any unregenerated fools talk you out of tour miracle!!

About recieveing the holy spirit, Acts chapter 1 and 2 I think would be good there. Speaking in tongues, 1 corintians chapter 14. Here is the deal. when you are saved, you do have the Holy Spirit, but not everyone speaks in tongues. There are pleanty of people that don't speak in tongues in the Bible. Like Paul, and well, Jesus Himself doesn't even speak in tongues in the Bible, among many others.

Speaking in tongues has nothing to do with being saved.
You need to understand there is an initial receiving of the Holy Spirit in salvation, when a person is born again, and a subsequent baptism in the Holy Spirit. Speaking in tongues is evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
The disciples received the Holy Spirit on the day of the resurrection as recorded in John's Gospel, chapter 20, where Jesus breathed on them and said "Receive the Holy Spirit..." The Greek tense indicates He meant receive the Holy Spirit right now, while I am breathing on you. The word for breath and Spirit are even the same word in the Greek. So it was at this time the disciples were born again and became spiritually alive, or saved. (see John's Gospel Chapter 3:1-8 and Romans 8:9)
The same event is recorded in Luke's Gospel on the day of the resurrection in chapter 24:36-49. There it is recorded that they were instructed to remain in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit, referred to as the Promise of the Father would be poured out on them. This was fulfilled about 50 days later on the Feast of Pentecost as recorded in the second chapter of Acts.
So we see the disciples received the Holy Spirit, in measure on resurrection day, at which time they were born again, or saved; and they received the Baptism or fullness of the Spirit later, on Pentecost, and it was at this time they spoke in tongues. Therefore speaking in tongues is evidence of the Baptism or Fullness of the Holy Spirit, not evidence of being born again or saved.

Yes you must receive the Holy Spirit to go to Heaven. But the speaking in tongues thing is misinterpreted. They spoke in a tongue that they could understand. Meaning the people in the crowds native tongue. Read about it in Acts its at Pentecost. Thats why the Pentecostals are called that, Clever play on words. You cant change the way they think my poor sister is caught up in that same thought. You are saved by the blood of Jesus Christ not what you can do. Some are led to preach some are led to teach others are led to serve. We all have different gifts that God gives us and speaking tongues is not one of them. Im not saying this is false but speaking in tongues only occurs in Pentecostal and Charismatic churches. Peace out......

It is a gift that even Paul considered a lessor gift and said that it would cease. If you read the New Testament you will see that the gifts present at the beginning faded out even in the early church time and they were primarily used by the Apostles or those close to them. Here are a few verses.
1 Corinthians 12:30
Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
NOTE- Here Paul is speaking of gifts and clearly indicates not all even in His time had the gift of tongues
1 Corinthians 13:8
Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease;
As to the work of the Holy Spirit it is to bring glory to Christ not to Himself. Do you love and obey Christ? It is His work.

When you get Saved (Spiritman Recreated) The Holy Spirit Recreates your Spirit and then HE comes and Baptise's you in the Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit). In other words, The Holy Spirit comes to Live (Baptise) inside of your Spirit.
Everybody that has been Saved is Baptised in the Holy Spirit.

Now, the INFILLING of the Holy Spirit is Another Thing, it is Actually Part 2 of the Salvation Plan.
NO, NO, NO, NO, no you do NOT have to be FILLED with the Holy Spirit (with Talking in Toungues or Speaking in Tongues) to go to Heaven.

You only have to be Saved (Born-Again) to make Heaven your Home.
Hope this helps.
