I'm fixing to get both a night job and a house of my own. This wasn't entirely forseen a month and a half ago when I got myself a papillon, now 4months old. Now, in order to keep her happy while I'm at work I want to get her a friend to keep her company, because my cat so won't be willing to make nice when she wants to play. He's a big fluffy grey thing with the temperment that I associate with rag-dolls, though his parentage is entirely unbeknownst to me.

We live out in the "woods" in the south, and that means that most dogs availible at shelters *what, you thought i was looking to get a PB?* are huntin' dogs like beagles or bassets or along the lines of "badass" like pits or rots. From what is expected to be found, in consideration that they are all mutts, what should I look for that I'll trust will not kill my Papillon in play or vice versa?

I've thought about getting a younger cat, but claws scare me when I'm not around.

Your dog does not need a playmate. When you are not home put the pup in the crate (where it should be anyway to keep it out of trouble) the puppy will sleep most of the time you are away. In a previous post you expressed the possibility of having difficulties with affording rent, bills and ETC... for this reason alone you should not get another dog until you are sure you can afford the pets you already have.

A Beagle mix could be a good idea. Beagles are medium in size and wouldn't be too rough when playing with your Papillon. If you can find a Beagle mix that is crossed with a smaller breed, that could be a great friend for your little Papillon. the only problem is the fact that you have a cat. As the Beagle is a hunting breed, they are bred to hunt and chase. A cat would make a great toy for a Beagle or Beagle mix.
If you don't mind a lot of grooming or spending a fair bit of money, a toy Poodle could be a good idea. They are sociable, smart and playful. A toy Poodle would get along really well with a Papillon.
Another breed is the Boston Terrier. Although they have a lot of breathing problems, and can cost a fair bit, they get along well with other dogs and need minimal grooming.
If you like the squished up face and the small body, a Pug would be a good choice too. They are really friendly and love company. They also have a lot of health problems. They get along well with other dogs and cats. I'd make sure your cat likes dogs before getting a Pug or Boston Terrier as their eyes pop out a bit and a scratch on the eye could lead to blindness.

Those are just some small to medium breeds. If you like big dogs, and you can find one in the shelter, a Labrador Retriever or Labrador mix would be excellent. They get along so well with kids, cats, dogs etc. Also if you can find a Golden Retriever or Golden mix. They are just as good as Labs but they have many more health problems. I'm sure that you'd know that cancer is the number one killer of Goldens. I'm also going to suggest a Dalmatian or Dal mix. As the previous owner of a perfect Dally, I can honestly tell you that they are one of the best breeds ever! If you buy one from a line that has no signs of aggression in any of their dogs, it will get along with everything. My Dal was great with my cat and children. Protective of the house but affectionate and loving to the family and well-known people. They shed a lot and are prone to a lot of health problems but are well worth it.

Another Papillon would be your best bet since historically, Papillons were bred to be companion dogs and live in a group of the same breed. If you don't have the money to buy another Papillon puppy consider a rescue Papillon from Papillon Club of America or Papillon rescue 911. All these rescue group will have an adult Papillon best suited for your puppy and since they foster dogs all across the country, there is certain to be someone near to where you live. However if this isn't a viable option any toy breed will get along with your Papillon but not Terriers since they were as a rule bred to hunt down game larger than a Papillon.

Honestly if you can find a Golden retriever mix of some sort, or even a beagle, they would both be fine. I, personally like Pitbulls and Rottweilers, they are some of the sweetest dogs I've ever had. I know people are scared of them because they've been treated badly, but that is not the dogs fault. If you can find something midsized, that seems even tempered, you should be fine. I think it's nice your looking for a buddy, she'll like not being alone all day. GOOD LUCK!

Why not get another Papillion? I know you probably paid good money for her and purchasing another one might not be in the budget. It appears that you want to get a shelter dog, which is admirable. Make sure the dog is smaller and has about the same energy level as your Pap. Beagles are good, even tempered dogs. A younger cat might be a good idea, just make sure that you keep the claws trimmed short so that your pup doesn't get clawed.
