By all rights, there should not even be a clergy class, Jesus said that all were brothers and all were ministers of the good news, there was qualifications set out for elders and ministerial servants but nothing for a clergy class, all baptized disciples are ministers, ordain by God, qualified brothers give public discourses to the congregation, Peter and John were unlettered and ordinary but they were outspoken on the things of God.Acts 4:13, 1 Corinthians 7:17, 1 Corinthians 9:14. Jesus did not appoint Peter to succeed to as a pope at Matthew 16:18, if you read the preceeding Scriptures you will see that Jesus asked the diciples who the people were saying who he was, then asked them, who do you say I am, Simon Peter(Barjona) spoke up and said you are the Christ the Son of God, at this Jesus said that he was building the congregation and told Simon Peter; You are Peter. He was saying that from now on he would only be known as Peter, not that he was the rock. The Scriptures in different places calls Jesus the rock.

first of all it shows how unoriginal most peoples comments about the catholic church really is. The comments used are the same as they were 400 years ago. Most christian religious bodies have a similar structure. Look a little closer and you will see. The word pope is an english translation from old Latin. Peter was in fact appointed to lead. Study scripture and Jesus's words are clear. Remember Jesus told Peter when you have recovered in turn you must help lead your brothers. As well the comments made by St. Paul in regards to Peter and his position. The images Jesus used were some as follows sheep, shepherd. Knowing that mankind at the best of times will in fact screw things up a shepherd is needed to ground the rest. Human by nature but should be open to being guided by the divine Spirit. Please think about the answers you give it could end up showing how little you really know or understand.

Yes he did. Peter. Pope means father.

No the word Pope is not in the Bible, neither is the word Trinity, but the doctrine is believed by all Christian faiths.

The Catholic church can trace a direct line back to Peter. He started the church and with it her traditions. The core dogma of the church has never changed. The sacrifice of the mass is recorded as early as 150 AD, in it's current form.

Believe me there is nothing you can throw at the Church that she hasn't heard before and successfully answered.

The thing Bible Christians do not understand is that the Catholic Church does not say the Bible is the only authority. The Church recognizes tradition, scripture, and magisterium all with equal authority but all relying on the other two. One cannot stand alone.

THis Should Pretty Much Explain IT
Why do Catholics believe that Peter the Apostle was the first Pope, when the word ``Pope'' doesn't even appear in Catholic Bibles? Just where does the Pope get his authority to rule over the Catholic Church?

True, the word ``Pope'' doesn't appear in the Bible--but then neither do the words ``Trinity,'' ``Incarnation,'' ``Ascension'' and ``Bible'' appear in the Bible. However, they are referred to by other names. The Bible, for example, is referred to as ``Scripture.'' The Pope, which means head bishop of the Church, is referred to as the ``rock'' of the Church, or as the ``shepherd'' of the Church. Christ used that terminology when He appointed the Apostle Peter the first head bishop of His Church, saying: ``Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona . . . Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.'' (Matt. 16:17-19).

People would argue Peter. First when he confessed the Christ. Secondly, there was the reinstatement by Jesus. Also, if you look to how Moses was the top dog and had others under him sit in rulings. Also there was the High Priest from the Levi tribe. So, there is precedence. But, I agree with you there should not be a Pope. Perhaps a council.

I think Jesus did not appoint a hierarchy because the word was to be written on our hearts and we can all learn from one another. The Bible does mention deacons and elders, but again there was not a mention of order.

properly, the default position should be that the Catholic Church (including the Orthodox) is the church that Jesus began by distinctive feature of historic previous. it truly is as a lot as Protestants or everybody else that disagrees to apply historic previous to tutor that it's not because they got here later. to declare that it's not the Church is a present day declare that has no starting up in truthfully historic previous. And it truly is in reaction to delusion somewhat than actuality. edit: evaluate this analogy. might want to you tutor that a vehicle is the unique vehicle depending fullyyt on its vendors guide? properly, some protestants opt for to take the vendors guide (ie. bible) and declare that it's not the unique vehicle because the motorcar would not appear as if the unique production unit photo on the canopy of the guide. It has some airborne dirt and dirt on it, perhaps somewhat rust around the sides so it may't be it. on occasion it has had some undesirable drivers. And, it has had some upkeep through the years, and had some further issues offered for it. So it might want to no longer be the unique idealized vehicle that they had envisioned.

Actually bishops were appointed in the early church. As Christianity spread rapidly, there were not enough teachers (pastors) Older pastors would "oversee" the younger, less experienced ones. One who oversaw was called a bishop. Rome at one time had over 40 Christian churches in the city. The bishop of Rome became more and more influential as time went by. Soon he became the supreme bishop. Around 600 A.D. the bishop of Rome became a pope. And the rest is history.

No Jesus never appointed a pope, the catholics added one because it is another religion just like mormons and all the other crazy ones out there. The catholics clame that peter was the first pope, ha. Well if that is the case than ask them if a pope can be married? well no they can't in matthew 8:14-15 it clearly states that peter was married. This is just a point to prove that catholics do there own thing.

Well with the catholic faith, the pope is like the spiritual leader of the church. In the bible Jesus appointed the apostle Peter to be the "rock of my church" and that is how Peter was first appointed the pope, or leader of the church. All the pope is, in todays terms, is the leader of the catholic faith, in making decisions about all things, like money to people who need it, etc. They stay a pope untill they die, recently John Paul II. I hope this helps!
