A few days ago my cat began to sneeze and act like he was coughing up a hairball every now and then. I made an appointment with a vet but it's about a week away and the condition has worsened into glogged nasal passages and just within the last day or so he couldn't jump up onto a futon that was only a foot high and now he won't even walk a few feet w/o sitting back down. He seems to be straining to breathe at times and his breath smells really bad. I really dn't want to wait 4 more days until his appointment but more importantly, does anyone have an idea what I could be dealing with?. Just a couple weeks ago this cat was jumping all over the place.

If he is straining to breathe, that is an emergency. You should take him to an emergency facility ASAP.

Forget your appointment, all vets take walk-ins and your cat is having a medical emergency, I worked as an emergency animal tech at an animal ER, your cat probably has a severe upper respiratory infection or it could be something as bad as aids or leukemia, if it hasn't been tested for those, it should be, but more importantly, don't wait! If your vet won't accept you as a walk in emergency and it is an emergency from the sounds of it go to another vet immediately, any cat that can't jump one foot is in severe resp. distress and could die, I kid you not get off the internet and take your kitty to the nearest animal ER, they are open twenty four hours a day, or call the # for your vet and their recording should direct you to the nearest vet or hospital covering them in their off hours. Don't wait your kitty could be gone by morning, I don't want to scare you too much, but I used to triage over the phone for these things and if you called me during the night I would tell you to rush in to put your cat in an Oxygen cage. Cats do die from Upper resp's if they are bad enough and yours sounds really bad! Good luck and God speed

That sounds like an upper resperitory infection. It also sounds very severe. If the cat is gasping for breath and you see nasal discharge that means it's very sick. You need to take your cat to the Emergancy Vet NOW! Do NOT wait for your vet appointment. You need to take your cat in ASAP!

URIs are very dangerous for cats and can be fatal. I'm not trying to scare you...well...actually if it gets you to take your cat in then yes I am. Your cat needs to be treated ASAP, I can't stress that enough!

This can be the result of several issues. Cats can have severe allergies just like humans. Consider carpet powders, new litter brands, air fresheners...etc...Cats can get severe upper respiratory infections or foreign bodies up their nose. Sounds like he may have a fever if he is week. I would stress the urgency to your vet and get your cat in quickly.

Call your vet in the morning, explain that this situation is now critical and you have to have your cat seen immediately. If it is having a problem breathing, get it to an emergency vet clinic tonight! This sounds pretty critical - you need to have him seen immediately.

a vet appt is definitly necessary. sounds like it was an upper respiratory that has progressed to pneumonia. a humidifier with warm air may help him breathe a little easier. if this were my cat, I would be at my regular vet or the emergency vet

Call your vet back immediately and tell them it is an emergency. To wait any longer is negligent. Sounds like an upper respiratory infection, that needs immediate vet treatment.

my neighbors cat did the same thing he had a cold and cyst on his throat that needed to be drained. I'm not saying that's what it is but the vet said that's why his breath was rank.

there are several things that this could be...unfortunatly almost all disease in the cat world have symptoms like your describing...i would take hm to an emergency clinic if it was one of my babies. They do tend to be a bit more costly...but it cold be the difference btw life and death.
