I have a terrible "lump" in my throat. Like the kind you get when you are about to cry. My chest hurts too, like something heavy is on it. I went and got an EKG at the ER and everything is OK. I don't feel panicky. But I do feel like I am about to cry for no reason. I never cry. I don't think I have cried for a year and a half. But I feel tears welling up in my eyes and I don't know why. And it is physically painful. It hurts my throat and chest. This has been going on for about 5 days now; am I loosing it? Has anyone else been through this? What's happening to me?

You might be experiencing hypochondria. Here is a link on hypochondria and some tips to get better from the encyclopedia:

"If you are worried about having a serious medical illness despite receiving reassurance to the contrary by a physician during a comprehensive evaluation, you might benefit from these techniques:

Keep a journal describing symptoms or events that led to your anxiety or panic attacks, or episodes of illness worry. This should allow you to see a closer link between your symptoms and external events.

Try to restrict or put a time limit on your internet medical research, reading of medical books, or self-checking behaviors as they tend to increase illness worries.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a good night sleep, well-balanced diet and a positive outlook. A good tip is to follow the PEAS tool sometimes used to combat depression: Pleasure, Exercise, Achievement and Socializing - try to add an aspect of each to daily activities.

Practice relaxation techniques, such as breathing, meditation or other methods as they help to decrease anxiety and the effects of stress.

Try to interrupt your worries with activities that will fully engage your attention and shift it away from illness; for example, hobbies, word or number games, exercise or walking, talking with a humorous friend, or recalling happy memories.

Think about alternative explanations for your physical sensations that might include stress or normal bodily changes.

Break your habits of worrying one step at a time."

I really hope those tips work! Good luck!!

You didn't say how old you are. If you are a young person and worrying about heart problems I would, like one answerer above, suspect hypochondria. Feeling a "painful urge" to cry for about 5 days is unusual and there is a reason but it may not yet be conscious. These are not symptoms of any mental disorder, I know of, other than sadness but if it persists you should consult a physician. I have never experienced this Talk to a friend or family member; you could be lonely.. Good luck and God bless.

Rent a sad movie and cry. Get it out of your system. If that doesn't help, go see a doctor. Usually your intuition is right. If you feel like you're going to cry, I say give it a shot.

See your usual doctor and explain your symptoms. See what he thinks. It could be nothing or it could be something that needs attention. Either way, a doctor that knows you will have an easier time diagnosing it that an ER doctor.

This is depression/anxiety. You can have panic/anxiety attacks with out feeling panicky. Actually, most of the time when I have them, it's quite a bit like you describe.
You should be on some medication like Zoloft or Prozac. Your doctor should also give you something like klonopin to help get you through the attacks when you have them.
Trust me on this. I've had this for years. You can get them to go away.

It sounds like something is stressing you out. It may be that you need a good cry. Stress can be hard to deal with at times. Try to figure out what is making you feel this way. And , it may be that you need to see your physician to help determine what may physically be causing this problem for you. Best Wishes

It may be something as simple as allergies even if you have never had allergies before. I recently had really watery eyes because of the pollen in the air. You also could have a little bit of the flu, part of the flu this year is coughing or the urge to cough which can cause that chest pain

that has happened to me but not the lump thing...i believe it is because of not showing your emotions it just isnt healthy for you or any other person. i cry for no reason just randomly now and i think its b/c i never show emotions...my health teacher told my class and me that it isnt healthy not to show emotions b/c it will come up eventually...so you probably need to start crying again when you get sad so it doesnt burst out at sum random time that is what im trying out right now... it could be depression. most people think being depressed just means being sad, but it also hurts physically and some people just feel weird, have weird thoughts,or feel like they're going to cry for no reason.
