The source says Greenland became ice covered in about 1.8 million years ago and Antarctica became ice covered about 34 million years ago. So I guess they melted some time before that.

Unusual because the media and now the government are reporting it as unusual. Its just a spoof to get the hoi polloi to start practicing conservation techniques. Got the new light bulb? Are you recycling? High MPG car? Its all a ploy to get everyone onboard to do what the soundboard requests. I don't care about the lies so much since the incentives are actually going to make our earth greener for future generations to come.

I've read that in some areas of the globe the ice caps are getting thinner; while other areas they are getting thicker. How can that be global warming??

They are melting as we speak. The US government has been keeping measurements of the caps and it has been said that they are slowly melting due to the global warming.
