When you speak to recruiter they give you a list of reasons to enlist. The first is the opportunity for school. then a paycheck, free health care, free room and board, an opportunity to travel ( well its actually compesation for your time) VA benefits, retiring @ 28, Discpline... and many more and then lastly they will say and you get to serve your country!... People join for different reasons even though once they are in they might say thats their own reason. I think the only real reason to do it is to serve your country and do more than just enjoy the freedoms we have here in America to go out and work for them!

To tell the truth I joined for all the reasons you listed but most of all to serve my country and to carry on a long family tradition of serving in the Army. I enlisted for 3 and then end up serving 8 years in the Field Artillery. I choose to get out because of family reason, but I loved every moment I was in, the places I got to see good and bad and all the friends I made.

I enlisted because I feel that it is everybody's obligation to serve their country. I think kids coming out of high school should automatically go straight to the military for 2 years minimum. Nobody would like that idea I realize, but I dont understand why so many have a distorted image of the military. I am in the Army, do I like it? No, but I'm still glad to be serving.

I enlisted before 9/11 because I wanted to serve my country and I needed the bennies for school. Wasn't expecting 9/11 to happen, though I was damned ready to go afterwards!! Then we went to Iraq which was complete B.S.!! Anyways, I never got the loan reimbursement, I went to Iraq for a year only to U out when I got back due to them not giving what was promised.

If you only want to join to serve your country, then go ahead.. But don't buy what that recruiter told you cause it's not true. Pretty sure you have to be in 12 years in order to retire as well.. Good luck though!

Things have changed so very much since I was in I certainly can't really answer your question. They didn't have this question when I went in. I joined because of the Cuban crises in 1962. The Russians were installing missiles in Cuba and they could reach our country with no problem. We fully expected to be fighting Russian troops during that time. We had been through basic and had 1 week to go when they decided to forfeit the last week and send us into Guantanamo Bay. We were standing on the tarmac and was just issued live ammo when they removed the missiles from Cuban soil. Whew.............

I enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1978 and stayed for seven wonderful years. The reason was at the time Iran had just taken our hostages, I felt patriotic. Although I did not go to Iran and Kill Iranian babies, I did get to meet Ronald Reagan. If I had the chance to go back in now I would in a heartbeat.

im not a military person but i can provide some answers, i think.

ppl enlist b/c they feel they need to give back to their country. it's their way of beign the change they want to see in the world. they're way of giving back to the world and being a selfless and altruisitc martyr, their actions are truly heroic adn im too much of a coward to do it.

if some are racist, this could be your opportunity to kill those you don't appreciate, you don't think should be alive, u kill them face to face.

i think if u enlist u get a good salary, so u get good money for serving your country, w/o much of an education

u culd read personal accounts of ex-veterans, ex-soldiers

I didn't.

I was drafted and stayed for 20 years.

Got married to a foreign woman and didn't fit back in the USA anymore.

It is the military's secret weapon for keeping people for a career.

I enlisted for the service to my country. I didn't want to be one of those people who complain about the war, why ever they do it. I wanted to do something about it.
