I'm interning part-time in an office. One of the employees is leaving soon. No one on the staff has said anything about it, although I gather it has been known for a while.

I don't know him too well even though it's a small office and have only been there for a month and a half. Is there a certain protocol for saying farewell or just let it be?

You don't know him well and you are not permanent there anyway. It is not up to you to worry about throwing a party or worrying about protocol - even though it is kind of nice that you would think of it. The powers that be in that location will know if a going a way party is appropriate. This person has been there a while and if his leaving does not stir anyone to do anything special for him - maybe that is a clue for you right there.

On the day he leaves wish him well and shake his hand.

No real protocol. You can just walk up to the person, wish them luck in their new job or whatever is causing them to leave and leave it at that. Being new to the office, you are not required to give for the gift or party.

The others in the office may, or may not have a farewell party for him right before he leaves... i.e. cake in the break room. Just depends on the office. In any case, on his last day, just say good bye, it's been nice working with you and good luck in your new job!

Get a small gift for the person. Think about it this way. You'll only be out a couple of dollars and they'll leave thinking your a great person. You never know when you'll run into them again.

I'd say the best way to say goodbye would be for you to tell him you love him and then sleep with him. I'm sure he'd appreciate that more than anything else you did to say goodbye.

Approach him and tell him that you heard he was leaving. Tell him that you hope he will be happy in his future endeavors and wish him luck.

It won't be necessary to do anything else for him. Remember, he doesn't know you very well either, you wouldn't want to make it awkward for him as well.
