Not really the easiet thing to explain, but just think of it as having 2-way radios or walkie talkies. You can arm your car alarm from the keypad that you got attached to your key chain. So now that you have your car alarm on, should something cause your alarm to trigger, The alarm system in the car will notify you should something trigger an alarm on your keychain. there are several type of car alarm systems out there. If your looking into getting one, I would strongly suggest a 2-way radio system for the reason i mentioned earlier about being notified if the alarm is triggered.

The best type of alarm system these days also come with a GPS transmiter. these systems are better that a standard 2-way, but with the extra features comes extra cost.

A dealer was once showing me one which he had installed on his own pick-up truck. They handed me there keys and told me to go start there vehicle and just simply sit in it. after sitting in the vehicle for a couple of min, it just turned it self off and the alarm started going off.
There system was so advanced that they could bring it up online with the GPS locator and disable the vehicle.
