I cant seem to play .avi video files in windows media player ten even though the error message and help files say that the .avi format is supported by WMP.
Can someone please tell me how to fix this problem.

You may need to install the proper codec for the particular avi file you're trying to view.

It's probably the codec. Codec means compress/decompress and it's a small program that tells your player how to run the file. They are quite common. Sometimes WMP can't read a file because the codec is missing. It will try to find it on it's own but usually this doesn't work. Chances are it is a divx codec which is one of the most common there is. www.divx.com and download it from there. Otherwise right click on the file you are trying to play, click properties, and write down what kind of file it is. Then try a google search with the word codec and the file type. Chances are someone has it out there to download and install. www.codecshack.com is a good resource. Once you download and install it to your machine it should work ok.

Either you have a corrupted avi file or you're missing a codec. Install the latest Media Player 11 will fix your problem. You can get it here : http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx
If the new WMP can't play your avi file, it means that the file is corrupted.

Had the same problem so I downloaded the K-Lite Codec Pack and it fixed all my problems with avi files. And gave me options for what codecs to install right in the installation process.

This is the only codec pack that i would trust, since every other codec pack i have downloaded has caused problems. Yet this codec pack has not caused me a single problem and even has told me about codec errors at the very end of installation. As well as giving an option to try and fix it

This page gives an overview what the pack is and what it supports. And gives a download link to the Pack itself:

First off, I don't recommend installing a codec pack, it will just clutter your computer with useless codecs and this can cause confusion for your computer. Get gspot, run it, and load your avi. It will tell you exactly what codec is needed to play the file. then install that codec.

VLC Player plays .AVI files without the need to install codecs:

Does it say it doesn't have the required codec loaded? Do you happen to know if it is a DivX file? That is a very common codec.

You can get divx at www.divx.com.

Good luck!
