Finding a free copy of Vista never mind most OS's besides *nix would be impossible if you want to keep it legal. during the designing stages of software there is a Beta which i an almost complete version but still has bugs(errors in the coding that cause the program to malfunction), most company's usually offer the beta version for free to a limited number of people that would be good for so long after it is actually put up for sale.
Personally i do not believe vista is worth the upgrade quit yet because there are still an awful lot of bugs and the software designers have not written to many programs to work with the OS yet. Drivers for existing hardware would be hard to find also if it is not a newer high end product.
If you give it about a year then thats when it would be the time to really make the decision.
P.S. Vista has a complex verification process that happens every time you boot your PC, so it would be difficult to find an illegal version that would last at all never mind for a lengthy amount of time.

dont waste time u cant download it for free and dont buy it for at least a yr so they can get all the bugs out of it
