The easy way: open your curtains in the morning. This will heat your apartment. When it gets cooler, close the curtains. This will help insulate your apartment.

You can buy small solar panels that will use that sunlight to store energy in a battery. Then if you get a converter you can plug appliances into it. There are also places on the web that will show you how to make your own solar panels.

Unplug things you aren't using, such as cell phone chargers, as they keep sucking energy, even when not in use. Switch to the new, energy efficient lightbulbs, and carpool.

Also, turn off lights when they are not required to light the house.

These few simple changes will make an impact.
