All you 'have to do' to become a Buddhist is to study Buddhism and to follow it's precepts ... there is no 'baptism' to go through, although some of the Buddhist sects do have some 'rituals' to go through to become more 'fully Buddhist.' Start by reading the Tao Te Ching ... it was not 'written by Buddha' but will give you a really 'good start' at knowing what Buddhism believes.

read a book about Gautama Buddha.
Dont worry , it is not a thick book.
And it is translated in simple English.
It explains the life of the Gautama Buddha and the teachings. It is very simple teaching.
Not to kill
Not to tell lies
Not to speak bad of others
Not to steal
Thats the 4 very basic rules to be a buddhist.
The teachings is about logic not base on myths .
Of course theres more rules and regulations. But those are for the more advance people like the older folks , novice monks and the permanent monks.Buddha/s are not god/s and Buddhist is not a religion. It is simply a way of life. Pure and simple.
Should you want to offer Buddha your gratitude.Just mention " namo amitabha " once.
it means homage to all the buddhas.
