decades ago, everyone wanted to live there and saw lots of great things about it, but what are the problems now about the City of Angels and the metropolitan area?

I live an hour away from LA, and avoid that place at all costs. Why?

1. Traffic. No matter what time you go, there is traffic. Only place I've ever seen traffic at midnight, for no reason. Some real geniuses designed the freeways there, and at three points along the 5 freeway, it goes from about 4-5 lanes to 1 or 2.

2. Do you like to see the air you're breathing? On a good "clear" day, I can see the mountains that are about 15 miles away, and I'm not even in LA! Even my doctor has recommended I move to get out of the air.

3. Do you like paying a fortune for crap? There's not a neighborhood I've seen that I would live in anywhere in LA County, well, maybe Malibu. Other than that, housing and cost of living is outrageous, and the whole place looks really ghetto to me!

4. Bums. They're everywhere.

5. Crime and gangs. They're everywhere too.

6. Do you speak Spanish? If not, you'll need to learn fast, because no one's gonna learn ENGLISH to talk to you.

7. Insurance is expensive, since illegal immigrants are allowed in the country to leach off of the taxes you and I pay, collect welfare, and not required to have car insurance. My car insurance tripled because I moved closer to the border.

8. It's freakin' hot and just plain ugly.

I've lived in So Cal my entire life, and am finally moving out of here. I don't know why anyone would ever want to live here, especially LA. If you MUST live in Southern California, I would recommend South Orange County or North San Diego County. They have nice neighborhoods, less smog, less crime, higher wages and its worth the extra money it costs to live there. The people are a little more snooty and traffic is still a nightmare, but at least you can breathe!

Good luck in whatever you decide to do!

Traffic most of all. It takes me 30 minutes to get to work taking 6 freeways and 45 minutes to get home (in moving traffice). Depending on where you live there is the annoying noise of traffic and freeways. Of course, those people who can afford it can pay to live further away from noise. Expensive housing prices is another problem. Two small bedroomed, small kitchen, one bathroom houses are going for $500,000 where I live and I'm not even right in the city. Forget about apartments, you'll be lucky to find a one bedroom for anything less than $800. In the summer especially the smog is horrendous. Sometimes you forget what color a clear sky should be.

I dont live in LA, so I'll go with my gut on this one Advantages: Year round sunny excellence Palm Trees (?) Hollywood, celebrities (this might be a disadvantage) No snow Disadvantages: Its probably really hot in the summer Phonies No skiing/boarding

Number 1: Extremely high real estate and rental costs
Number 2: Horrendous traffic

That being said, while other people are digging their houses out from under 10 feet of snow, I'm sitting in my garden in the middle of winter, 70 plus degrees, enjoying the sunshine.

Traffic, too many people. But still a good place to live, unique and interesting and if you are in the entertainment industry it is the capital of the biz of show.

(Every city on earth has crime, pollution, is expensive etc....so those are hardly an argument against)

Traffic, increased violence, the price of housing, lack of urban planning for parks and open space.
