I have a one year old Goldie, and she is always shaking her head. I know that it's probably her ears, but when I check there is nothing there and they both look completely normal. She's always scratching them, too, but I dont know what it is. She shakes her head every second and I dont know what it could be!

Most likely it's a light ear infection. One of my dogs gets that.
At first, the vet diagnosed it as stress, which was ridiculous, but now he re-diagnosed it as ear infections and she gets medicine which helps. It still scares me when I see it happen, though.
Sometimes she stops shaking her head when I distract her, make her jump off the bed and follow me.
Since she can't tell you what's wrong, it's best if you take her to the vet.

You might want to still take her to a vet and get it checked out. My Rhodesian Ridgeback also did this when she was a puppy at 6 months old. My vet said I wasn't cleaning the ears out good. And what an insult that was to me being a Pet Groomer and all. >:} They also said to go ahead and pour the ear cleaner right in the ear and massage the ear flap over the ear opening to soak it and send the cleaner bubbling deep down where dirt can collect. And back away quickly as your dog will want to shake its head, dispersing some of the cleaner. Then you can wipe any excess liquid out from the inside of the ear afterwards, especially if your dogs ears have been bothering them. Also a tip: if your dog swims, water can accumulate down in the ear and cause it to collect and retain the moisture creating a yeast infection. And man do they stink! You don't always have to use an ear cleaner frm the vet or pet store. Hydrogen Peroxide for really yucky and scabby ears, or rubbing alcohol to medicate red and inflamed ears. Or both if your feeling patient as the dog may not be. I hope your Golden Retriever's Ears get better. Good Luck with it! :)

Take your dog to the vet. It could be an ear infection, which even when you look you won't see. Often in the first stages of ear infection, the infection is deep in the ear where we can't see.
Check for any redness, this could be a sign that it's gotten pretty bad.

But most importantly, take your goldie to the vet!! It's of great importance that you get her ears check as soon as possible. It could be something as simple as a little water in her ear, or it could be a nasty ear infection which needs to be treated soon. Please take her in.

Golden's are notorious for having ear infections. Shaking of the head is a good indication that one is either there or brewing deep in her ear.
She needs to go to the vets and have them take a look.

It is most likely something to do with her ears BUT! my dog had head-shaking problems, and when the vet checked his ears there was nothing wrong. It turns out he had a peice of dog food stuck in his throat. How it was stuck, i have no idea, but it was there. I doubt that is what wrong but don't automatically think its her ears, it could be something bizarre like that. =]

sounds like it is most likely an ear infection. you said you aren't seeing anything, but some dogs have very deep ear canals. if she continues to shake- for whatever reason- she may end up with an aural hematoma( swelling of the blood vessels in the ear flap) and hat can be costly and time consuming to correct.
i would suggest you make a vet appointment asap.

An inner ear infection doesn't show from the outside, but is likely the reason she shakes her head..This is usually caused by getting water in her ear. she does need to be treated before the infection causes hearing loss..

I have a golden also. Sound like she has mites. You can pick something up from the pet shop for that. Another thing to look for is hair in the ears possibly deep

It may be that the problem is down deeper than you can see. the ear canal is not a straight shot ...it has a corner to it. You really should have her looked at ...vigorous shaking can lead to a hematoma and at the very least your dog is uncomfortable.
