I have tried to call them but been on hold tooooo long!

Most IRS offices will help you fill out your returns. The won't do it for you but they'll answer questions and give you copies of the various publications that apply to your tax situation.

One caution, though. Don't depend upon them for absolute accuracy. The customer service folks at the IRS offices are no better than a middlingly qualified tax preparer. Their error rate is annoyingly high, actually, on more complex tax issues.

If you have a complicated tax question, ask them to put the answer in writing. If you have it in writing from the IRS, you can avoid penalties and interest if an audit subsequently proves that their advice is wrong. You'll still pay the additional tax, but the penalties and interest will be waived.

No, their job is not to prepare taxes, but to review those submitted, audit it, answer questions and everything else.
