What requirements are there...what kind of training...what kind of certification and how to get it...particularly in the state of Florida? Also are the requirements different for a sheriff? Thanks!

I also forgot to ask about the polygraph test...what kind of questions do they ask? If you have done drugs in the past to they hold things like that against you?

Contact the police department or sheriff's department personnel area for the requirements. Don't go get the training until there is some certainty that you will be accepted.

Here is a basic rundown of what happens for most departments. The selection process for Police Officer candidates includes the successful completion of:
An application for employment with the City's Human Resources Department.
A physical fitness test consisting of usually 5 or 6 standardized tests
A written examination.
An oral interview with members of the Community and the Police Department.
A comprehensive background investigation — includes a voice stress analysis or polygraph in order to determine truthfulness in the following areas: criminal history drugs, morality, and honesty.
Psychological testing.
An oral interview with the Board of Public Safety.
A medical examination.
State Pension Board Review.

Basic police academy curriculum (20-24 weeks)
Field Training Officer Program (time varies by department)

These processes vary by department. Check the websites of some departments you may be interested in for more specific details on the process. As for the past drug use, some departments have a no tolerance policy, some will allow minor drug use if a specified amount of years has passed since the last drug use.

I don't think you have to go to college to become a police officer. I think you just have to go to the police academy for 2 or 3 years and then you have to take some tests and if you pass you can become a cop. On a polygraph test they will ask you more than once the same question just because they want to make sure that you are not lying. If you did drugs in the past that could hold a little bit against you. Also they will ask you questions like "do you like to drink"? or "have you ever used violence against anyone"? If you respond yes to the last question you have to explain to them when did you use violence and against who. Well good luck if you want to become a cop. It is a tough job but i heard it's very rewarding. Also to become a sheriff you have to be a cop for i think 10 years. But you can just call or email the police station and they will send you the information that you need.

The first step is to go to city hall or your local city management office and see what openings they have and obtain an application.

From there, there are different positions... you could be a traffic cop, road cop, office desk cop, jail monitor, etc...

Based on the position will determine the requirements; but, either way you have to go through the police academy which does have physical requirements.

It doesn't seem as if the process should be all that difficult. I have personally had the opportunity to know certain people that you would NEVER guess as any public official. From my understanding, the process to obtain a corrections certificate is fairly short. You could become a correctional officer in less than a year of training.
I is best to check with your local corrections office.

You have three years after high school before you can even put in an application. Go to college and get a degree. Contrary to what the others will tell you do not get a degree in criminal justice. Police departments are not at all impressed with that.

I'm not so sure about being a cop. But if you want to be in the FBI i know you have to either go to the academy in Virginia...or be a cop for 4 years. Pretty tight, huh?
