It may be kennel cough, he may be yacking and eating it... (sorry that sounds gross) or it may be something else. There's not enough info in your question to know what it is, plus, I'm not a vet. =)

No matter what, it's time to talk to the vet. Give them a call and let them help you.

There is a possibility that he has a type of worm. I have encountered lots of animals that have the heaves that are ridden with worms.
Just to clerify, it IS normal, but again, he does need to be checked for worms.

It is possible that he could eat it again, which I have seen quite often. There would be a small wet spot or particles of the vomit on the floor. Take a very close look.

Defenitely get him checked out by a vet, but don't freak out just yet... see what the vet has to say. Chances are that it will be very simple to solve.

He might be getting sick but then eating it. Dogs do this as a form of protection from other animals. Just keep a close eye on him, when you hear him start go and check on him.

If he's not actually vomiting he may just have a hairball that he's trying to cough up.

Maybe he's just having some dog coughs. But you should still get him checked out by a vet.

has he been eating? and drinking ? I have run across dogs that for some reason gag when they get nervous or sort of hicup but if he eating and is'nt expelling anything maybe a vet should check the dog out.

Constant dry heaves are not normal. Take him to the vet, it could be due to an infestation of worms, or something else. In any respect, it is simply not normal and requires medical attention.
