A friend and I got into this argument, and he says that if we really want to get into shape, we should play football instead of soccer. I have my own arguments, but I wanted to see if anyone could give the "end all" argument.

I don't think it's as simple as that. Offensive linemen in football don't run much per se but they're wrestling with 300-pound defensive linemen every play, and that's not a whole lot of fun.

I think if you took the average amount of running for every soccer position and the average amount of running for every football position, you'd find that soccer would probably hold a slim lead over football...In football I'd say that only 10 out of 22 players on a field at once (2 receivers, 1 halfback, 3 linebackers, 4 defensive backs) require a lot of running, meanwhile just about every soccer position except keeper require some amount of running.

If you measured pure physical exertion and not just running, football would be the clear winner. The least strenuous job on the field--that is, quarterback, will occasionally get decked full-on by 200-300 pounders and is expected to get right up and keep playing.

This is a stupid question although i will answer it. It is an easy answer Soccer players run more its a fact. I play(ed) football for a long time and running isnt really the big part in football most plays last 5 seconds but i will say that football is more demanding on your body.

soccer duh. football has some break time to get into position and they stand there until they hear hike! soccer is all about running and getting the ball away from the opposing team, and football is the same, but tackling slows it down. soccer is all about the legs, while football is more of a work out for the legs because the body is their main focus.

Soccer players run much more. Soccer players are much fitter. Although NFL cornerbacks and wide recievers are generally faster and stronger than soccer players but arent as fit as them soccer players.
