Gym.

Visit a doctor or physical therapist who can tell you what limits to set. You certainly can do upper body work, and likely low impact work with the lower body. The right brace will help.

Most pain is due to muscles being tight so they press on nerves and other stuff. Quads are involved when it comes to knees. For full information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies - it teaches what to do (is broken into sections).
The quickest muscle relaxer (natural) is a couple swigs of molasses - 2nd is bananas - be aware if your are causing pain you are causing damage - so stop.

You can work out in the GYM if you only workout other parts of your body. Abusing an injury further doesn't make any sense.

Working out in the JIM doesn't make much sense either.
