I think it is symbolic of ultimate trust in God. They do it because God told them to, and they don't believe in the New Covenant. I imagine it hurts the infant like crazy, but pain breeds character so it all goes back to how much faith does one have in God?

I am A Believer in Jesus christ, I was born a gentile,

I was 20 yrs old when that Procedure was done on me and
It hurt like I don"t know what, not only that I was called for jury duty & had to be there,an understanding Judge excused me.
I thought about Abraham,He must have been 80 yrs. old, when covenant was made,I wonder what the conversation was when
He Informed the Males. This was done for a medical reason.
The second part of your question,I believe Jewish People ,still do this. Both our sons had this done at Birth,I insisted,I believe there
are good healthy benefits from this,

Not just Jewish people but people of all faiths do this. It is healthier for the child. They have some pain as babies, but the pain is alot worse if an adult male has to have it done.At the age that a baby is circumsized which is usually with in a week from birth and the pain is a lot less

Imagine someone removing the skin from one of your fingers. Or if you have experienced complete removal of the outer layer of skin somewhere on your body, you know how painful and raw it becomes.

Of course it hurts the child. They can, however, not remember it because they are too young.

One good thing about pain though is that after enough of it, your pain circuits in your body temporarilly short out and you don't feel pain anymore. Takes extreme trauma to get there though. This might qualify.

I can tell you It dose not hurt me. =P

I have been to a few circumcisions in my life and I have heard kids scream more from a scraped knee than dose the baby.

In all honesty the infant cries for about half min then stops.
