That being closer to someone (or something) you admire might make you not admire them so much, since you'd start to see those flaws that aren't immediately apparent.
It would be like meeting some really successful person you admire, only to find out that they're arrogant and rude to everyone around them... You wouldn't admire them so much anymore.

Basically it means that things seem nicer from farther away...

I think it is like the one "Absence makes the heart grow fonder." Maybe it means someone looks great from a distance but when you get close enuf to interact with them they may have a sucky personality......but then here's another one

It reminds me of "absence makes the heart grow fonder". Basically, when you are far away from someone, your appreciation and love for them grows.

When you don't live with a person you don't know his/her flaws which will aid in you admiring that individual.
