They shouldn't. People should volunteer because they want to, not because they have to. If someone is part of a volunteer project they want no part of, it will definitely reflect in their work.

Volunteering in the community gives one some experiences out in the "real world."

If the student attends a public school, then he/she is paying the community back for the public tax dollars that made it possible for him/her to go to school.

If the student attends a private school, this gives the student an opportunity to also "pay back."

Volunteering looks good on college applications and employment applications.

Volunteering may also help students decide which vocation to take. More experience and insight into professions is good. :)

First of all, it connects them to the community. The student is no longer someone who just "takes" or uses services, he or she is providing them.

Second, the experience can be very rewarding. Contacts are made. Things learned. A discovery made that time can be spent doing something for the collective good, and that society in fact relies on the service of volunteers for many operations to run smoothly.

I work with teen volunteers; about 1/3 of those who come out to our land steward days work very hard and are diligent in their efforts. Another 1/3 does the work but isn't as involved in doing the work well, and the last 1/3 does some work but is more involved in the social aspects of dozens of teens showing up for 3 hours of work. It is the first group that inspires me to come up with quality assignments that will help all enjoy their experience and hopefully learn something that they can take home with them. Some return on a regular basis, and that is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job.

Because it gives them the perspective that there is more to life then they can see from their classrooms. When you're a teenager, you think the world revolves around you. It is good for young people to realize that they are NOT the center of the universe. It's also a chance for them to develop compassion and charity while they are young and it helps them get into college. We should all be volunteering in our community at least a small amout per year, as we can afford, no matter what age we are!

Have you ever hear the term "Responsible Adult", or "it takes a village to raise a child"? If every one was concerned about their communities and environments then we could live in a really loving, beautiful society.
On a daily basis I pick up trash on the street, say "hello" to people who are less fortunate and just stay aware of my surroundings In case someone needs my assistance.
Love is what makes the world go round and adds spice to the pot as well. I feel I am personally responsible for my surroundings. What did Jesus say,? "Love thy neighbor as thy self". We are all connected!

sorry spell check does not work

being a avid volenteer all my life working with teenagers, and others, i can say that by volenteering in your comunity is the most generous way to give back, it teaches you respect, responsiablity, self esteme, involment with other, and it looks good on a resume later on in life, and you can make a difference...

i volenteer at our community school breakfast program, three morning a week, and i also volenteer 2 / 3 days a week in the after school for student community improvment program,

a lot of the teenagers that are there help build floats for our little commuinity parads, we are working on st, patricks day right now, and we have some teenagers, planing and helping each other, plan games and activity for spirit week, on community help a neighbour day, we do once a month, in the winter, we will shovel snow in driveways, or if someone is sick , sit with them for the day and keep them company, and help them, out, i had one student last week volenteer to cut wood for a neighbour who hurt his back and his wood was low, he got a couple of other guys and together they had it done in two hours, they cut the neighbour enough wood to last him the rest of this winter because our communty is so small about 90% of the students volenteer, it bring the teenagers together and they have something to do,

i think we have a strong communty involment hear because we live in a remote area in newfoundland, and everyone knows everyone, i only moved here in dec-05, prior to here i volenteered at a hospital and long term facility and meals on wheel program,
in ontario, i also volenteered in montreal with the welcome hall mission for the homeless, when you see these things around you, that are so much worst, you can be surprised how a simple offer of help can make someones life better

i recomend if you decide to volenteer, do it in area that is of intrest to you, if you like to read, go to your local long term facilty and volenteer to read to seniors, become a part of your school volenteer program, there is so much help needed in all areas, because of funding cuts, that volenteers make such a big difference and i hope that you would consider even a hour of your time can improve somes life and yours

It's a good idea to volunteer while you are in high school, because it looks excellent on your college application. Also it helps kids that are undecided with what they want to study for college. It also helps you be more giving instead recieving.

:) good luck!

Because it looks good for college, that is depending on what college you are planning on attending. If youa re plannign on attending a University, definatly do it, if you are plannign on going to a community college or tech school , not as important
