confrontational with you because she accused you of staring at her and her brat as they made some kind loud, prolonged, tantrum scene right in front of the cash register. I mean, how could you possible not look with all the screaming right there in front of you while waiting in line to pay for your gasoline. What is the proper response???

Proper response.....or mine. I would have told the cow to f-off. But that isn't the proper response, however to keep quiet and walk away would have been worse on my heart. A battle of wits with the unarmed can sometimes be fun.

You could say. Oh no, sorry you thought that, I was looking at the gum (or something by the person). And then be quiet and not respond to something else. Say that calmly of course.

Or you could take a different route and help that woman out a little with her pride. Say something like "I've just been in your position that's all" (so she don't feel alone) or "I was just noticing how healthy your baby is, what a nice set of lungs" or "Your child is so beautiful" or something that would make her leave feeling a little better about herself and a little guilty for snapping at you.

Do you mean that the child was having a tantrum? Or both the parent and child?

The first question you should ask yourself is "Would I have stared at this scene if it were a thin woman and her child?" And given the scenario that was presented, had that woman reacted the same way, would you still feel the same?

The next question is to ask yourself if you were in the same situation, would you have reacted the same?
There are a lot of answers, but there is no right reaction.

Tell the mother straight, its not normal to see children screaming with prolonged tantrums in a public place and if she could please handle her children in a disciplinary manner or get them out of the way so you like her, can be be served.

It might have been best to have just ignored the whole thing. Then again, if the woman was angry, she probably would have snapped at you no matter what you did. She was angry about her child crying, most likely, and she just took it out on the people around her.

Tell her if she'd spend more time with her kid than dicking with strangers she's have a child that wasn't such a pain in the asss in public.

"I do apologize madam, I was only concerned that the child might have been ill or injured but now that I'm certain that is not the case I will be on my way."
