Have you contacted your House representative about HR254? Do you even know what it is about ?? ( I've been warning this was on their agenda) Do you realize that if this passes the next step and end result will be that saying homosexuality is a sin will be a hate crime punishable with a fine, lawsuit, or jail time?? This will likely follow if this law passes just like in Canada; "Churches will have their tax-exempt status revoked if they oppose homosexuality.
Homosexual marriage will be legalized and recognized in all states.
Polygamy will be legalized.
Scouts, and all non-profit organizations, will be required to hire homosexuals as leaders."

WAKE UP!!
Tell me what you think Christian friends. Do you want your kids kicked out of class for saying it's wrong for a man to lie with a man like with a woman, etc.?
I've said repeatedly the REAL HATE AND BIGOTRY IS TOWARDS CHRISTIANS, NOT FROM!!

I think the Hate Crimes Prevention Act is long overdue, and I hope it gets passed. It's not about hate speech, by the way. Have you actually read it, or do you just accept what a Christian web site says?

This is a textbook example of the slippery slope fallacy: "if this passes the next step and end result will be..."

I actually just contacted my representative yesterday. Gay marriage is the biggest threat to Christianity and religion in general today. All crimes are hate crimes. The guys who killed Matthew Shepard got life in prison (he wasn't even killed because he was gay, but that's a whole different story). What more punishment do you want - the system worked! Why do we need special rules.

I am VERY concerned that like Europe and Canada, we will soon not even be able to say that homosexuality is wrong, or churches will be stripped of their tax exempt status. This will redefine the family structure as it has been known for thousands of years, and marriage will no longer mean anything. Polygamy and pedophilia are next, maybe not now, but 100 years down the road..certainly. Christians need to wake up!

I think a law prohibiting anyone from stating their beliefs is wrong. I don't think we are called upon to force people to obey God. Christians WILL be persecuted. It's not something we can preclude through legislation. Count it joy when you are deemed worthy to suffer for the sake of the gospel. And so what if we lose our tax exempt status? I get so sick when I'm listening to a sermon and the pastor says he wishes he could speak freely but financial considerations prevent him from doing so. How the church has come to see retaining a 501[c] designation as the 11th commandment is very puzzling to me.

I think you're completely full of garbage.

First of all, polygamy will not be legalized ... because the government will not want people to take part in several marriages in an effort to get more money back on taxes, be more eligible for government aid, etc. Therefore, the US government will never condone polygamy.

Second of all, to punish churches for holding certain beliefs would be completely against one of the major foundations of this country -- religious freedom. So therefore, to remove a church's tax-exempt status due to one belief would be unconstitutional, and would never pass. There is plenty of christian influence in the house and senate (not to mention the executive branch) that will protect their interests ... so these things would never even be taken seriously.

So, since we have established that you have the constitution-given right to free speech and freedom of religion, you have to understand that other people have the same right ... even if (*god* forbid) they are homosexual or non-christian. People have the right to live their lives and walk down the street without being told that they are an abomination and going to hell. Who are you to judge others, anyway? Did your savior command you NOT to do that? In the new testament, the followers of the risen Jesus never complained about the sinful ways of the Roman government or pushed to have a voice in leadership. They simply spread the "good news" to those who would listen. If they were jailed for doing so, they didn't appeal to a higher court and whine about how it wasn't fair. I think modern-day christians should try to be more like their historical counterparts.

By the way, homosexuals don't have any more of an agenda than women did in the early 20th century. Just think, if it wasn't for those hard-working girls (who were often called un-christian), you wouldn't even have the right to be discussing what's happening in your government.

Dude, I've known about that for a couple months now. And yeah, it is kinda scary. Cuz it is a violation of freedom of religion, I'll be surprised if the supreme court honors it if it does get passed. but ya never know. But seriously though, if it does get passed, I'll be cautious with it, but if I have to answer questions about homosexuality in public, like when I'm doing open air preaching etc... then well, I guess I'll go to jail, cuz I will not lie about what the Bible says. Jesus said that we would be persecuted, and the Bible does talk about christians being persecuted, even Paul and the other apostles found untimely ends due to the persecution. Such is life though.

Wow....I think that fines or jail time are a bit extreme, but I don't support the Church's teaching that homosexuality is a sin.
And the polygamy? I don't support that either.
And if homosexual marriages are legalized, that's fantastic.
As for my kids getting kicked out of class for that reason, it won't be happening.
And I believe the hate and bigotry if both from and towards Christians.
Just in case you're wondering, I am Christian myself.

Since when is equality for all human beings hate and bigotry against christians? How many christians are killed in hate crimes in America - I could pull up many instances where homosexuals have.

It is attitudes like yours which keeps this country backwards. We will not grow until we are all equal in the eyes of man's law which is the one that counts.

Perhaps you'd care to read the language of the bill:
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h110-254

It only says:

Whoever, whether or not acting under color of law, in any circumstance described in subparagraph (B), willfully causes bodily injury to any person or, through the use of fire, a firearm, or an explosive device, attempts to cause bodily injury to any person, because of the actual or perceived religion, gender, sexual orientation, or disability of any person--(and then it lists the penalties).

You might be pleased to note that it protects YOU as well.

It says nothing about churches or polygamy or marriage or the scouts. Calm down.

IMHO, I really don't think this law will pass. It infringes too much on the First Amendment, freedom of speech. I can say, due to this constitutional right, that I think homosexuality is a sin, that I think muslims will go to hell, that I think (insert whatever here) because it is my right to do so. What is not right is to make those statements certainties, i.e. Homosexuals WILL burn in hell(even though it is true). By the letter of the law, in my honest opinion.
